What ever happened to the On/Off button?

Buy remote switches as said above ^^. They sell them in B&Q at £15 for a pack of 3. You get 3 adapters (device -> adapter -> plug socket) all of which you can set to a button on the remote. They use pretty much no power (like 20p a year to have on 24/7 - I own a power reader.. also handy at working out which of your lamps and lights are evil).

You can buy extra adapters as well which you could sync to the same remote. Very convenient for turning off plugs which you can't normally get to (TV plug is usually behind a mahosive cabinet). We've got 6 and we mainly use them for lights and lamps because it looks swish.

What difference would that make?

It would make a huge difference, a lot of power is lost in the trasformer / power circuit. It would be a lot better to use a 1f cap, this will take a negligible amount of power to charge and would easily run a standby circuit for days/months.

Even a alkaline AA battery could run a standby circuit for several months.

Anything that has a transformer on it (even in standby) will consume a small amount of electric (usually 3-10W) - If you have 10 or 15 devices in stanby 24x365 thats a lot of wasted electric. Just turn them off at the plug - it's easier.

After checking my own house, I noticed I was consuming approx 40-50W with everything off or in standby (including the fridge).

Even the PIR's on security lights consume 3W all day long. As does the doorbell transformer and the two bedside clocks (at 5W each) - Even the tiny light on the switch for the power in the shower - 2W. It all adds up to around £50 of needless electric every year. The old BT hub was 18W.

We have a really old spare TV in the house that, on the RF remote control that has 3 buttons, holding one of them down physically pushes the on-off button out!
That brings back memories. My cousin had one of those, but the button became loose. When you pressed the button on the remote, the on/off switch on the telly shot across the room!

Got quite adept at shooting the cat with it...

It really grinds my gears when people leave our cable box on! I dont think they realise how much energy is used in recieving a digital signal decoding it and outputting it to an analouge signal.

I feel Im for ever turning the damn thing off.
