What exactly do researchers do?

But in science, what's left to research, are the majority of papers released token gestures or are they all furthering science in some way.

We don't know "everything" and very probably never will so we will always need to seek new answers, challenge old assumptions and make new discoveries.

Off the top of my head:
  • What dark matter is
  • What dark energy is
  • A unifying theory of gravity and quantum mechanics
  • Cures for diseases that are currently not curable (there's, like, a lot of them)
  • Self-sustaining nuclear fusion
  • Room-temperature superconductors
  • Artificial intelligence
I'm sure other people can add to my list, it's far from exhaustive.

I guess I just won't turn up to the lab tomorrow now.

You've convinced me that there isn't that much left to research and my contributions at work wont make a difference.

Just remember folks, the OP is a conspiracy theorist so you're wasting your time.
True, I forget that CT's research is basically "well this guy on fastbuck/noobtube said this, so that must be true" and often can't even understand that chemicals can be both good and bad, or be produced by more than one specific and intentional method.

Waste stacks of money in my experience. It’s one of the factors that caused me to leave.

I remember working with a multimillion piece of equipment in the US. It wasn’t particularly useful, no one other than me could use it, it was only bought because one of the many rich individuals wanted to donate a stack of cash and it had to be spent on something.

In 1969 before the moon landings, my watch was analogue, I did my GCE exams without even seeing a calculator. Two years later in work I joined the digital age.

However the research did not end there, now my microwave has more decision making power than most early computer devices.

Even in science a lot of known science is "banked" without necessarily being put into active use or part of active knowledge and when applying techniques to develop a new product a huge amount of research will go in to see whether there are other developments that could increase the performance, efficiency or safety of your product, etc. cross-reference for known incompatibilities or to see if there are new ways to do something in the light of developments in different fields and so on.

Exactly what I thought, very little. Nice cushy job paid for by tax payers. This was my whole point from the beginning.
