What exactly does an EGR Valve do?

I mean with the engine running iaind :o

Getting the inlet manifold off the HDi lump whilst in situ isn't something I want to attempt :p

Yeh I know, point was if it's that stubborn I cant imagine the cleaner alone would help, engine running or not :)

Depends on when in the engines cycle the EGR system is actually used, mines had two MOT's since being removed and it passed the emissions test with flying colours.

I've also removed the SAI system which reduces emissions on startup but makes the car sound like a cross between a tank and vacuum cleaner.

Are you telling me my car has an EGR system and it's not just limited to nasty diesel engines? (I drive a Leon FR 1.8T btw)

If so would you recommend removing it? Do I need any parts?
I'm quite happy to leave the SAI system though as I like the idea of heating the engine up quicker.

Not all EGR is bad, but the valve systems that allow exhaust back into the intake are ****. A better method is to put phase variation on the exhaust cam and keep the exhaust valves open longer on the intake stroke.

i doubt it mate unfortunately.

i had to take off the manifold itself to actually rid this crap. which as you probably know on the HDI, is a complete utter ***** given the fact you have to remove the exhaust manifold first (and therefore disconnect the turbo, oil lines, exhaust etc). not to mention the fact there is next to no room too.

i would recommend against it, once i started the job on mine i regretted it! :p

Mine helps provide a stratified charge and hence allows 25:1 AFR at circa 48% thermodynamic efficiency.

I don't think ill be blanking mine off :p

Diesel astras are constantly having issues with the EGR vavles mate, I thought it was more common on the more powerful 1.9 16v model, some needing a replacement as soon as 15k on the clock!!!!

Id say to defo get it swapped. They are such a pain in the arse on the astra that its putting people off the 1.9's alltogether.

It comes down to how often you use the car. If you have a diesel to nip to the shops, you're asking for it. If you drive 10 miles whenever you get in the car you will probably be fine.

Get rid of the EGR valve, or blank it off.
Mine cacked up the intercooler top hose and the inlet manifold on my tdi landrover.

Don't have any pictures, but the manifold had a thick layer of marmite all over the inside of it, about a quarter inch deep.

To clean it (and also the intercooler) I used cheapo white spirit from b&q and a largeish bottle brush. I left them both soaking for about an hour. After much sloshing about of the intercooler, I rinsed it with lots of cold water, then left it in the hot sun to dry, finishing it off with a hairdryer. The inlet manifold was given a good scrub, but the solvent dissolved most of the nasty black stuff.
I also gave the ports into the cylinder head a scrape with an old feeler blade - more tarry gunk there too, but I think the inlet manifold got most of it.

When using any solvent to clean inlet manifolds/intercoolers etc always make sure that there is no trace of the solvent left before refitting and starting the engine. Bad things can happen otherwise:eek: :D

You reckon running a can or Carbon Blaster or 10k Boost would remove all that crud SB118?

Not really sure, i've got a can of 10k boost i'm going to run through the wifes 306 dturbo, but i don' really want to go taking the inlet off to do a before and after comparison!

Yep, its called the Combi valve on the 1.8T, the SAI and the EGR system are rolled into one, so if you want to remove the EGR both need to come off.

We've got one of these on our Boxer van (ford engine). Had it replaced on warranty, which has just run out, and now it's doing it again!

Think we'll get the damn thing blanked off..

my 55 plate 1.9 ctdi zafira currently displays the emission warning light, has done for a month or two. diag pointed to the ERG. Despite this, it past it's last MOT without issue.

I'm thinking of getting it removed/blanked off.

I had mine blocked off while it was in for the boost pipe problem.
The pipe was almost off so it made sense.
It seems to smoke less, and it seemed to use less fuel at higher speeds, but I need to see if the long term MPG has improved.

It's a shame I didn't clean the manifold though.

^^
true - I inspected the pipes from the turbo carefully, there was little or no contamination (the intercooler was pretty clean too). Other than cleaning out the breather pipes/unit, I was concerned that there might be leaking from the turbo seals, but the chariot doesn't smoke so there must be reasonable integrity there.
But there was a lot of soot and tar inside the pipe from the egr valve that tees into the intercooler to inlet manifold pipe. Nasty stuff. Glad to get shot of it.
