What exactly does the "i" stand for? iPod. iTunes. iLife. iPhone.

"iPod" was a name that Apple registered for Internet kiosks, but never put to use.

Source: Wikipedia.

(I assume the "i" therefore was meant to show the internet link up, originally, and has since lost it's meaning and simply has become a catchy sounding name.)

at a guess, i would say it doesnt stand for anything more than it sounds...I
ties in witht the whole mac as an experience thing.
I Mac

I was wondering yesterday what the 'pod' bit meant lol, and I was thinking that the 'i' is just to do with user interaction; similar to 'YouTube' or 'Myspace'

As far as the i in iPod goes, I thought it was "ignorant".

Almost everyone with an iPod has to have the volume at stupid levels so everyone else in the train carriage has to listen to their poxy "Gangsta Rap" or whatever other dross they have on.

You should tap one on the shoulder and say "Excuse me, could I have a quick listen to your ignorant pod please - I'm thinking of getting one for a family member". :p

True iPod owners do not listen to "gangsta rap"

Tell them kindly to return the products to their rightful owners :)

LOL good point... :)

Seriously, after a long day at work you just want to chill on the train but instead have to put up with this rubbish. The other bane of course, is people who play music on their phones through loudspeaker.... worst invention ever tbh.

And do you also hate Creative soundcards, Pentiums, top premiere teams and anything else that is successful?

Granted it's just a shuffle, even at full volume with the supplied headphones I can barely hear the music when I take them out.

Incoherantly poor sound quality?

I think its just a catchy thing with apple really, same as having e or x in names, makes it sound cool or modern!

I'm more conufsed what the Pod bit is about!?

The device itself is great. It's just people that can't use such devices without consideration for others that I hate :)

I believe the "i" refers to the person owning it. As in, the device is personalised to the owner. E.g. an iPod contains an individual's music collection. An iPhone will contain an individual's text messages, music, phone book etc.

I've been on an Apple training course today and yesterday. Someone asked the guy running it, and yes, it's 'internet'.

Saw something on bbc news yesterday about Cisco apparently suing Apple over the iPhone name. Sounds a bit silly but hey, go Cisco! :p
