What Filter?

Hi

I've been given a new DSLR for xmas and now I need to put a filter in front of the lens to protect it from getting scratched/damaged.

What sort of filter do I need, just a regular Sky Light, a Polarizing, or something completely different?

My last camera was a G2 from Canon, so I'm new to all this filter stuff.

Thanks

You should buy a polariser to make skies look amazing, but you'll probably want to take that off in other situations, so get a UV filter. This protects the elements from UV ray damage, and stop scratches getting to an expensive bit.

Best to keep a UV filter on all your lenses at all times for protection - always cheaper to replace a filter than a lens. The UV's also prevent a Bluey haze occuring on some shots caused by Ultra Violet rays. This happens mainly at altitude so if you do Everest then you definitely need one.
A Circular Polariser is a great idea to enhance colour saturation outdoors and well worth having. (Circ Polfilters are about 3 times the price of UV filters) :)

My polarising filter was £12
My UV filter was £12

You can pay as much as you want really, you do need a 'circular' type polariser though.
