I currently have a Phenom 965 quad BE and a GTX 660. I know neither of those are going to deal with the newer gen games out in Ultra with nice frames.
So I'm thinking of upgrading to a FX-8350 and a R9 280X the question is which one would I benefit more from having first if that makes sense :/ as I cant purchase both out right and have to save for the other.

Don't get an 8350, just get an 8320 and a decent cooler and O/C it.

Depends on what sort of games you are playing? BF4 can play well on a 660 but is quite CPU intensive. I would go with CPU then GPU.

Not sure if a 965 would bottleneck the 280X or not.

Personally I would say the video card, games these days depend far more on a dedicated GPU so having the best one you can afford is going to help your system a lot.

Yes it would.

I have an Antec 620 loop so cooling shouldnt be a problem? Also what makes you say 8320 over the 8350?

It doesn't really matter which you do first IMO.
If you go for CPU get an 8320 as stated above.

Your system will only be as good as the weakest link, if you game on most games. Go for the GFX card.
If you are a battlefield nut, get the CPU
HTH

If it's just games that are a concerned then the gfx card is the sensible upgrade as the improvement will be significantly more noticeable, even with the cpu bottlenecking the 280X.

What is the likely time difference between buying each? As generally speaking gfx card releases are much more frequent so buying a new processor now could mean that by the time you've saved for a new gfx card there is something better available or the 280X has gone down in price.

Time difference would probably be a couple months at best student and funds are tight,
well yeah i might have to go with the 8320 first then since the 280x actually just went up by £20 (thanks miners), Also will the 8320 support mantle ive had a bit of a google on the matter and its a bit vague.

Awesome, well looks like you get an upgrade either way and in a couple of months there will, no doubt, be some new gfx cards available for you to ponder over!

get a custom cooler aswel, the stock one is loud and crap. and make sure you mobo is decent enough to overclock it, i have a m5a97 r2 and cant do jack with my 8350 with a xigmatek aegir with 2 fans on push and pull, i have given up trying
