After enjoying Richeh's original thread in music and box office (which has become quite the hit - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18049585) I thought I'd copy the idea over and see if it worked in here - it may well sink off the first page in a day but oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained!

I kind of felt there was nowhere to talk about games that people had recently played unless you fancied bumping ancient threads, so as a platform for discussion, I thought people could post mini-reviews of games they have just completed (or have essentially 'played through'). Then people can comment on this, add their own reviews or whatever, as long as short as you like... look, just read the thread in music and box office, it's not rocket science :p

So what game did I complete last night?

Deadspace (PS3) - I'm quite the fan of the survival horror genre and sci-fi so I couldn't wait to boot this up. My initial impressions were 'holy poo this is actually pretty scary' - the plot (although a rehash of famous films) and introduction was brilliant and the atmosphere created was immense, in particular thanks to the astonishing sound (clanking pipes, distant moaning, space blips and bleeps...). As time went on and more and more enemies were sent hurtling towards me, I became far less frightened and sank into what was primarily an action game.

The more I played the more I realised it was a (yes I know I go on and on about it) Resident Evil 4 clone, which in my book is pretty much only a good thing. The item collection and upgrading system was fun and encouraged you to play on just to see how powerful you could make your weapons... to an extent (will be discussed in a moment!). Of particular note was the first several chapters of the game which ultimately I thought were superior - I liked how the plot progressed and the tension really cranked up in places. At one point you are trapped in a room and have to sit there are wait until the un-killable monster chasing you slowly and noisily catches up with you

Sadly the more I played on, the less impressed I was. Some of the later chapters were fairly lame plot wise (feeling somewhat repetitive) and there wasn't enough variation in the gameplay to keep things truly gripping. Perhaps one of the greatest problems was the fact that after I fully powered up one weapon I become virtually invincible - not once did I come close to dying from an enemy in deadspace on the medium setting. I had a google and it seems I was not alone in this complaint, once you had power it up, there was little point in using anything else. Name of gun in spoiler for those who don't want to see:
Ripper.
Ultimately, this was a very good game let down by a lack of variety in the gameplay and (in the end) the increasingly less convincing plot. If it had kept up the level of polish and gameplay variation seen in RE4, it potentially could have surpassed it. So for me, this gets a solid 8 out of ten. Worth playing deadspace 2?

So yeah, fire away!

Cool idea, shame I have the cronic inability to sit my self down and actually finish game! Last few iv actually finished were Zelda OOT and MM

Windwaker next so a little wish me luck!

God, you are going to struggle with the last section of WW... one of the best Zelda games up until a totally unforgivable fetch quest towards the end. Such a shame! :(

Good luck :p

Never played MM... :o

How much variety can there be stuck in a space ship surrounded by crawling nasties? Deadspace, from start to finish is almost perfect. Just enough variety to keep it interesting and believable but its the tension throughout the entire game that makes it better than any other game in this genre IMO.

You did play it on the highest difficulty, right? If not, YOU'RE DOiNG IT WRONG! :p

Deadspace 2 is also excellent and only very slightly inferior to DS1 so yes, its definitely worth playing.

I didn't play it on the highest difficulty no, I probably should have done, but even so, I barely even used the statis function except for puzzles, so with that I can't imagine it would have been grossly harder. Especially since the medium setting was so easy!

As for variety, RE4 had in the castle section of the game alone - catapults section, blind slasher section, the sewers, the 'right hand man' section, controlling ashly, the mine cart section, the hedgemaze, climbing the tower... and so on. There was always some amazing set-piece in play. In deadspace it was either 'out jumps a monster' or 'room is locked, here comes a wave', it didn't even compare in that respect. But yes, as a result of the graphics and the sound, it was fairly tense at points.

As for RE:4. The game was able to have more variety due to the setting, but Deadsapce being more confined played like watching a Sci-Fi horror film, and for me it got it spot on. RE:4 is still one of my all time favorite games, just for slightly different reasons.

I agree that it got the atmosphere spot on - it was much better than, say, doom 3. As I said though, the more it drifted towards the plot of (film in spoiler)
Alien
the less impressed I was so I thought the opening chapters were much better.

I have to say though, just when I thought it was all over, I did get one massive jump right at the end - gah :D :D :D

I'll pick up DS2 I guess :)

Also, if you liked DS, I imagine you would probably also like Bioshock.

I love Bioshock, 1 and 2. :)
Number 2 is worth getting? I got the impression that it was weaker compared to the first, which kind of puts me off... but these days it seems rare that anyone will say a sequel is better!

 MM is the best one! (in my very unbalanced opinion after only doing the n64 ones)

Well I like the style of WW though fetch quests across the sea  boo-urns!
I liked exploring the islands, I did not like having to find a map, paying stupid tingle a billion pounds to decipher it, then sailing out again to pick it up.... 8 times!

Thought I do another mini-review of a game I recently completed... yeah I'm bored :)

God of War 3 - GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!:mad::mad: That basically sums up the God of War series. The protagonist Kratos is so goddamn angry and bloodthirsty that you begin to think that even Chuck Norris wouldn't stand a chance should he bump into him. The title screen alone lets you know that you are about to unleash possibly the most intense amount of bad-ass ever seen, as Kratos leers at you to menacing music.

It's an overused term, but the game practically defines 'epic'. Right from the off you are marching up mount Olympus to slay Zeus during a huge battle of Gods vs Titans. There can be no doubt that the graphics are phenomenal, perhaps some of the best I've seen - huge towering characters sometimes many times bigger than the screen often set a backdrop for an endless waterfall of blood spilling everywhere. Throughout your adventure, you will (brutally) tear apart god after god working your way to the head honcho. Violent is an understatement, 'sick' is more often more appropriate, as you tap X to graphicly smash someones face in until it's a red puddle of gloop.

Gameplay wise, the principle is the same of the last games - mash square and occationally triangle to create a whirlwind of death as a result of a combo system. However, the controls have been perfected. All the attacks feel more balanced in terms of power and speed, the combos are more varied and easier to pull off (in prior games, square sqaure triangle was the key to winning the game). Kratos can move around scenery at a greater pace and less clumsily - all in all it works just brilliantly. In terms of plot (which will be totally confusing if you have not followed the first 2 games), things start getting a little wooly at the end and it's a shame that the trilogy died on this weak note in that respect.

Overall I feel this is totally unmissable and in terms of excitement and fun is one of the best games you will ever play. Relatively short, but (like Uncharted 2) consistantly brilliant and relentlessly entertaining. If you have a PS3, buy it. 10/10.

:D

I liked the Line Gun, but it felt like a waste of ammo, it was good at killing the little crawly things whose name escapes me, but I found that a lot of the time there was a conveniently placed explosive barrel nearby whenever those guys showed up. So yeah, just stuck with the Plasma Cutter for the rest of the game. :)

I can't believe you guys didn't go for the ripper. That thing just munched everything NOMOMOMOMNOM, even on the harder difficulty settings so I'm led to believe from a quick google. Supposed to be one of the most overpowered weapons in gaming ever :p

It takes too long controlling the stupid blades! Plasma Cutter drops most enemies in like two or three shots, or my favourite is blowing the legs off and then just curbstomping them when they're crawling around on the floor.

I don't know how it took too long to control, you press fire once and you essentially have unlimited ammo for about 12 seconds so just wiggle the stick about obliterating everything :p

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory for the 2nd time. :(

Going for the Platinum, luckily I only have to do normal now. Ubisoft really need to learn to make stackable difficulty Trophies, the final time i'll be playing it will be with a permanent frown on my face.

You would play through something you don't want to for a video game achievement?!

:o
