After enjoying Richeh's original thread in music and box office (which has become quite the hit - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18049585) I thought I'd copy the idea over and see if it worked in here - it may well sink off the first page in a day but oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained!
I kind of felt there was nowhere to talk about games that people had recently played unless you fancied bumping ancient threads, so as a platform for discussion, I thought people could post mini-reviews of games they have just completed (or have essentially 'played through'). Then people can comment on this, add their own reviews or whatever, as long as short as you like... look, just read the thread in music and box office, it's not rocket science
So what game did I complete last night?
Deadspace (PS3) - I'm quite the fan of the survival horror genre and sci-fi so I couldn't wait to boot this up. My initial impressions were 'holy poo this is actually pretty scary' - the plot (although a rehash of famous films) and introduction was brilliant and the atmosphere created was immense, in particular thanks to the astonishing sound (clanking pipes, distant moaning, space blips and bleeps...). As time went on and more and more enemies were sent hurtling towards me, I became far less frightened and sank into what was primarily an action game.
The more I played the more I realised it was a (yes I know I go on and on about it) Resident Evil 4 clone, which in my book is pretty much only a good thing. The item collection and upgrading system was fun and encouraged you to play on just to see how powerful you could make your weapons... to an extent (will be discussed in a moment!). Of particular note was the first several chapters of the game which ultimately I thought were superior - I liked how the plot progressed and the tension really cranked up in places. At one point you are trapped in a room and have to sit there are wait until the un-killable monster chasing you slowly and noisily catches up with you
Sadly the more I played on, the less impressed I was. Some of the later chapters were fairly lame plot wise (feeling somewhat repetitive) and there wasn't enough variation in the gameplay to keep things truly gripping. Perhaps one of the greatest problems was the fact that after I fully powered up one weapon I become virtually invincible - not once did I come close to dying from an enemy in deadspace on the medium setting. I had a google and it seems I was not alone in this complaint, once you had power it up, there was little point in using anything else. Name of gun in spoiler for those who don't want to see:
Ultimately, this was a very good game let down by a lack of variety in the gameplay and (in the end) the increasingly less convincing plot. If it had kept up the level of polish and gameplay variation seen in RE4, it potentially could have surpassed it. So for me, this gets a solid 8 out of ten. Worth playing deadspace 2?
So yeah, fire away!
