What game really had an impression on you?

VII.

Can't really go a few days without thinking about it, even if it's for a few moments.

It was my childhood epitomized. I genuinely don't think I'd have coped all that well through school without it. Some people may not understand that, but that's how it is for me.

Metroid prime on the GameCube was a masterpiece. Still easily one of the best games I have played. Ninja garden is up there with the best games I have played as well.

For me it was Tomb Raider on the playstation. Having just replaced a megadrive i was blown away by the scale, the story, gameplay, music, sound and overall experience.

Second is FFVII also on playstation. Just wow.

Deffo agree with Ocarina of Time. I played through it this year and my only bugbear is that the end of the game (after the shadow temple) feels like a drop in quality - more linear and less exploration.

Dynamite Headdy is one of my all time favourite games... the music and visuals stick with me to this day. The whole idea that it's a puppet show and everything is made of props etc... just wonderfully bonkers. Absolutely nightmarish difficulty though :s

Resident Evil 4, however, is the game that remains the most impressive to me. It does the neat trick of introducing a new gameplay mechanic frequently / just a fraction of time... maybe 20 minutes or maybe 5... then drops it and moves onto something else. There is barely any 'chore' backtracking. If you can get over the fact it's not 'zombies' then it's a frantic survival RPG with mind boggling ambition. Whilst RE5 did improve the controls in the traditional sense, the move or shoot mechanic carried over from old school tank controls really added something. Stand-out moments:

The initial village scene (best opening ever in terms of just dropping you in it - no chance to get used to it)
The hedge maze
The initial clawed blind boss encounter (has been rehashed by numerous other games)
The right hand man (brown pants time)
The regenerators
The sewers

I could go on and on :D

Speaking purely about console games, I would say Wii Sports. It is one of very few games that I would describe as family friendly in the truest sense of the phrase (i.e. not just meaning 'appropriate for all ages'). It made an impression on me because it was one of the first times I can remember being in a room with an extended family and everyone of all ages was playing and watching, rather than say a smaller group crowded round a computer in a corner while others did something else.

RPG games made the biggest impression on me:

Secret of Mana - First RPG game I played and as noted by someone else in this thread the story and music is excellent.

Suikoden - Loved the music and gameplay of this one and the story is above average too.

Final Fantasy VII - Just the sheer scale of the game

Shenmue and Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast. My favourite games of all time.

Did we just become best friends? :D

I remember trading in some DC games and seeing Shenmue and debated getting it. My Dad said I wouldn't like it but it looked interesting so thought why not!

Shenmue 1 & 2 will forever be my favorite games of all time and I'm so SOOOOO happy about Shenmue 3!

I miss driving the forklift about :D

Ocarina of Time.

That game was such an enormous milestone in immersive world design at the time it completely blew me away.

Same. Nothing else has quite come close to matching what OoT had back in the day. The sheer scale of it was just epic and it was worlds ahead of anything that was out and to come out. IMO it is Nintendo's greatest work to date and my favourite game of all time. I sank so many hours into it during my early years and was made all the more joyeous as it came out 3 days before my 12th birthday!

I forgot to mention the Silent Hill series and Resident Evil 4. Both are fantastic games I played mostly with my friend back in the days and I really value that time emotionally. Resi 4 was something truly special, I agree with everything you've said.

I loved the tank controls, felt really oldschool and really added to the feeling of danger.

Also, amazing replayability and unlockables.

Too many, but for pure story and the atmosphere for me The Last of Us. This was just for me the best 3rd person story driven game that has ever been made.

But there are too many, Championship Manager just took so much of my time! LOTOR again loved this so much.

Journey was amazing, such a beautiful game, had no idea someone real was going to drop into my game either.

Vice City was a masterpiece, took the best of so many movies and brought them together into a great package, the music is fantastic and still hasn't been bettered. I'd pay anything for Vice City in the GTA5 engine.

Greendog the Beached Surfer Dude on the Mega Drive, my dad bought the console before Xmas and it came with this and Sonic, I managed to blag him to let me play it to make sure it worked (the standard with non-techy parents). Have great memories playing that for a couple of hours before it was packed up and put away for Christmas morning.

Goldeneye on the N64 with a bunch of mates, couldn't beat it at the time.

Team Fortress Classic - put in so many hours, had a number of all night sessions with my buddy until the sun came up.

EVE - played this to death back in 2003-05, was an experience like no other.

I understand it 100%. In more recent times, the only games that I can really look back on fondly are Fallout 3, Skyrim and Heavy Rain

In the past, I would say Zelda and Resident Evil.

More recently I have got into Fallout 4, MGS:TPP and also Farcry 3/4... Loving the mix of main story mixed with the side missions.
