What game really had an impression on you?

I've played many great games and my favourites in terms of fun factor are probably Red Dead Redemption, the Yakuza series, Colin McRae Rally series and old NFS games.

However, in terms of lasting impression, there can only be one answer: The Last of Us. Pure perfection. Every single character was fleshed-out, amazing dialogues, the subtlety of relations between Ellie and Joel, quite a lot of genuinely touching moments and a mind-blowing ending. The entire game feels like a beautiful journey with a wonderful sense of closure, even though it's all linear. IMO, nothing comes close in terms of storytelling and the gameplay isn't anything to scoff at either.

The Last Ninja on the Commodore 64. From the minute it finished loading I was flawed by the graphics and particularly the music. I still listen to it 30 years later.

I was never too gripped by metroid prime and gave it up after about 20 hours Iirc :o

Some games for me :
Goldeneye 64 (split screen was awesome!)
ocarina of time (fantastic 3d and so ahead of the curve. I really hated the water temple though!)

Halo (perfected the split screen format for its time)
Rainbow 6 3 - xbox (one of my first adventures into original xbox online gaming, and my it was fun!)
Halo 2 (awesome xbox live)
Halo 3 (awesome xbox live again, really expansive console features! Inc forge, Co op, theatre mode)

Most of these multiplayer games haven't aged well!,

Mgs4- those end scenes were great!

GTA 5- pushed the boundarys of 360 gaming

Final Fantasy 7
the story, the characters, the whole game just felt epic, i've never felt such connection with characters in a game before, first game i played that tugged at me emotionally.

TES - Morrowind
Lost count of the hours i sank into this getting lost in the adventure.

Most recently i think BF1 campaign left a big impression on me, I wasnt sure what to expect from it, its amazing how emotionally attached you become over characters over a couple of maps without having a lot of time to build the characters story.
I mean i've just finished watching a the cutscenes again, that mixture of hauntingly beautiful music, dialogue and stunningly beautiful scenery, all mixed in with the harsh brutal realities of warfare, all comes together so well.

Ocarina of Time.

That game was such an enormous milestone in immersive world design at the time it completely blew me away.

Same. I remember playing it Christmas morning (98?) totally absorbed. Incredible game, just wonderful.

Tomb Raider 2 on PS1 - playing this for the first time the Venice level in particular just looked amazing!

Like many though (I suspect of a certain age range) the N64 stands out, Mario 64 was just a revelation at the time and Goldeneye still leaves me reminiscing about proximity mines on the Facility map!

Not so much recent although GTA Vice City was just immense and such a fantastic game .

Super mario bros - I cant put into words, It never feels old and can keep playing it, this is a odd for me.

saga master sonic/alex the kid (the first 2 video games I ever played)

Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite - 2 games i thought looked amazing

Shenmue 1

Shenmue 2

Playing through the story gripped me for hours and hours, imho 2 of the best games ever made.

Have you played the Yakuza series? It's the closest thing we have until S3 releases. I actually think they're better games overall (blasphemy!). Yakuza is more down-to-earth and quite silly but there's always a very nice story undeneath and fighting/heat actions are immensely satisfying. Loads of side stuff to tackle and great substories.

I doubt you haven't played Yakuza if you're a fan of Shenmue but if you didn't, it's worth it.

A great mention. What an epic epic game. Countless hours with mates huddled around the TV battling it out on that.

Good, then you're in for quite a treat:D

I grabbed a PS4 two weeks ago just to go back to this series (all the other great exclusive are a nice bonus:p) and I'm currently playing Yakuza 0 in Japanese. It's great fun and fortunately my language is more or less enough to get me through the game;p

0 is coming to the West at the end of January. There are two separate trailers for the main characters they've been heavily americanised, though:

If you don't want to play through every game in the series (because honestly 1 & 2 will feel a bit dated now), then I suggest watching a recap included in Yakuza 4, play through that, then 5 and then 0.
Yakuza 6, which is supposed to bring a closure to Kiryu's story, is coming out on December 6 in Japan but I doubt it's going to get a western release anytime soon:(

There are also spin-offs taking place during the Edo period.

You can play Yakuza 5 on the PS4 using PS now but you'll need a PS3 to play 4. It's a bummer they couldn't make the PS4 backward compatible:(

Metroid Prime - Gamecube. I have played this for hours and hours and then replayed it some more. It was a damn hard game, and also enormous. Took a guide to actually finish the thing in the end. But I enjoyed every single second of it. At the time as well it was beautiful, and is still a good looking game now IMO.

Funnily I fired it up the other day and THAT feeling of nostalgia when the menu system opened and then the opening sequence coupled with the narration and music...gave me goosebumps, absolutely incredible!

Other games. Ocarina of time as already mentioned. That was truely something special. Also Wind Waker. For being bold with the cell shading. I am so glad they did.

Metriod prime is a master piece .I have played through it a dozen times and yes it's hard . In fact the very last boss took me a long time to beat as it was so tough. Currently playing it again on the dolphin emulator .
