What game were you surprised to like?

X-Com Enemy Unknown (PS1)

We and my mate were taking the mick out of our friend for liking this. After an hour we were hooked and played it constantly for 2 years.

Happy times...

Hmmm.

Maybe the Serious Sam demo. I somehow stumbled across an article about it, mentioning that it had hordes of baddies at once a bit like Doom2. So I tried the demo and was blown away by the engine with it's unrivaled LOD optimisations coupled with a good sense of humour and hectic gameplay.

Moto GP URT 3 was a pleasant surprise too, as I never really got on with Moto GP 2. Some nice tracks, good graphics/music and fantastic framerate.

Driv3r, while a game with many flaws, was still a lot better than I expected given the mediocre reception it recieved. The cinematic storyline is pretty good, and some of the missions were a lot of fun.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I didn't buy for a good year after it's release and I wasn't sure if I could handle an RPG anymore. Turned out to be one of the best games I've ever played.

I hadn't played the original (again, put off by RPG elements) and it got slated in some circles, but I found Deus Ex: The Invisible War highly enjoyable.

Command and Conquer: Renegade was a game I didn't actually get round to trying until last year with the release of the First Decade compilation. It was regarded as merely an average FPS on release, but even some 3-4 years later it was a still a good play. A very nice selection of weapons (one of the best in any game), coupled with varied environments and a reasonable storyline helped to make up for dubious AI and visuals - certainly a lot more fun than I was expecting.

Now im torn here, on the one hand i agree with you, i really liked Invisible war, ok it doesn't stand up to the original but in its own right its a pretty good game.

On the other hand i am struggling to hold back the profanities and utter rage at you for having played invisible war but not the work of utter genius that is Deus Ex 1, go play it now and be happy :p

Has to be Unreal 2. It got a whole load of bad press when it was released so I was expecting a huge disappointment, but on it's own it's a pretty decent game. I reckon they'd have done much better not to call it Unreal, as it had precious little to do with the original and franky had a very difficult act to follow.

I was suprised by Guild Wars  Couldnt stand the thought of paying a monthly subscription so when i saw Guild Wars for £9.99 i bought it but wasnt really expecting much from a "free" MMO... but  Loved it :D

Oblivion. I had always not enjoyed any RPGs i had tried before that. It was great fun, and the first person aspect really let me get the hang of it a lot faster. I was also amazed at the graphics at the time, as the prettiest game I had played before that was Far Cry (a gap of three years).

WOW. slash and hack rubbish was never for me. great teamplay and brilliant single player and that's what makes it.

COH I guess. I'd never really played an RTS before - I usually just play FPS, RPG or driving games. I wasn't really "surprised" I liked it as such....I always knew I probably would like an RTS if I sat down and played one...but I was surprised by how much I liked it. As soon as I finished it I bought SupCom.....and love that even more!

Probably wow when it first came out. Wasnt really my type of game. Played it for 1 year then grew to hate it as much as I loved it first. I cant really see myself getting into another mmo ever again, I look back with horror at the time I spent playing it for no reward (in real life) except an aching back.

I've tried LOTRO and got to the mid 20's and getting seriously bored, will be getting cancelled shortly.

Calm down dear :)

I've played Deus Ex - just I played Invisible War first (hence "hadn't" rather than "haven't")!

Company of Hero's. "what!" you cry. I played the demo, but i found it absolutely dire. I got the game for a tenner, and blitzed through it, loving every moment.

I was surprised in some ways to like Stalker. I had read all the previews of it, thinking it would be great, however the loss of many features led me to believe it wouldn't be as good as I'd thought (eg blowouts). However, I recently bought it and it was pretty good.
