Bought 2 mackerel from tesco the other day, says had to be used up the 2nd but meh didnt wana have it one day after i buy it.

Its them vacume sealed ones where you get 2 pieces of mack. Says with a marinade.

Just wondering how to have it tho. I was thinking jersey royal potatoes and some carrots and that be it cos of having to have 2 pieces at once. That or stirfry but i rather not do that i think or maybe just a spot of salad like lettuce toms and cucumber.

Thoughts? Keep in mind i dont wana buy anything to go with it so just what i have in the house.

I like to keep it fairly simple and flake it into some rice with cherry tomatoes and avocado. Delicious.

In fact... to the supermaket!

Mackerel is atrocious if not fresh, I'd just make sure you have loads of flavour with something like horse radish and some creamy mash.

The best Mackerel is the freshest, it doesn't last as long as lean fish like cod or salmon.

Fresh from the sea, gutted, slashed across the body, two bay leaves and horse radish ladled into the cavity and thrown over hot coals on the BBQ, you just can't beat that, the skin is so tough you can burn it to death and the meat stays white and tasty.

I prefer mine flaked with lettuce and chilli all wrapped up in a soft wrap.

If you would rather have it warm, how about flaked through some pasta and peppers, mushrooms etc.

I like making kedgereer actually. Fry an onion in oil and butter, add half tsp each of garam masala, ground cumin and turmeric. Let them cook out and add some washed basmati rice. Mix spices etc around then rice then add the correct amount of water for your rice- maybe a little less. Cover and leave rice to cook. Meanwhile defrost some peas in boiled water and boil a couple of eggs. When the rice is just cooked stir in the peas and flake your mackerel in. Give it a quick stir and cover with a tea towel to remove the moisture. After 10mins or so you can serve. Peel and chop your eggs in half to serve on top. Lush.

Superb idea!

Not had it in years and already craving it :)

jersey royals go with anything, if you ever want to grow your own ones there called international kidney, they just call them jersey royals if they were grown in jersey itself.

Was these btw.

Hmm with rice eh and to flake em you just get a fork and scrape like mad? Before or after cooking to do that?

As i just got it as i want to start eating more fish and try to be healthier. So this is the starter for me i wana make it delish and easy to have with somit quick and then i might buy more.

Aaah, they don't look like the ones I normally buy. Looking at them I'd say you definitely have to cook them first. The ones I buy are smoked so you can eat them cold or heat them up. To flake them it is best done cold after cooking. You just break them up with your fingers :)

Cheers, i tried this just now i duno what its gona be like and i might have overdone it cos of the 2 fillets instead of what i think 1 would have done but u cook it in the microwave as 2 so..

Its a bit more curry looking than i thought it would be, i followed this recipe.
http://www.fiveeurofood.com/index.php/2012/03/kedgeree/

Didnt have massive spring onions or parsley or lemon but had lemon juice so hope that works.

Tried to pick all the bones out of the fish but its hard to feel em for some reason ah well least i got about 10 out before i had to put the fish in.

Edit- better color version close up

Left it for 5 mins with a teatowel over to dry the fish a bit well hope it does.

^ Cheers.

Tasted a bit like special fried rice just with fish in. Not sure im a fan of mackerel or not after this unless i was just annoyed with having to careful chew each bite cos of risk of a bone in there lol. Still im gona try keep more fish in my diet if i can i might try a smoked fillet next time i dunno or maybe a diff type of fish that is more close to my favs like cod and haddock.

Might be just because i really shredded the fillets to tiny bits maybe thats why i didnt enjoy it as much as it wasnt like flakes u get usually but just very small bits of the fillet all over. If i do this again im gona make sure i pick up "pin bone picked" so theres no bones in and make them more chunky pieces.

I like mackerel with sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, capers, a drizzle of olive oil and lots of nice brown/wholemeal/seeded bread to mop it all up with.

Good effort sir! I forgot about adding some lemon juice and parsley for garnish!

Best to flake and check the mackerel carefully before adding it. I normally leave the girlfriend to do this :p Its also nice to save some to put on top.

The hardest part is getting the rice to be nice and dry, hence the tea towel. Otherwise you end up with mush which isn't great!
