What graphics card for 1680X1050 gaming?

Quite a few different opinions here!

Personally I'm not going to upgrade for atleast another 2/3 years and while I'd like the GTX or even a GTS the 1950's are quite appealing if they can cope with everything on at 1680X1050.

Decisions decisions!

Well i can tell you that the X1950 Pro wont cope at a res of 16850x1050. Even if it somehow does at the moment, it wont in a few months time.

Just get the 8800GTS 640 or the HD2900XT, they are both pretty much on par with each other.

I'd get the 2900XT personally, the hardware is there it's just a matter of drivers. It's starting to beat out the GTS 640MB so it's not a bad buy for the price.

Also, when the 2900 Pro's come out the XT price should go down, or you could get a 2900 Pro?

I notice most of you are talking about a few different ATI cards or the 8800, how would a 7950GT 512MB cope with this res for Gaming? Already had 1 view, but like to get a few!

What about the 2900Pro for £170?. Out in 10 days!.

We're all hoping that with a slight overclock that this card will go to 2900XT speeds and even better would be further :D.

If not the the X1950Pro or XT would be a good card but don't expect AA @ 1680x1050 in the newest titles. I have the X1900XT overclocked past XTX speeds and I can't get AA in most of the newest titles on my LCD screen. No hope for my CRT screen running at 2048x1536 :o.

comming from someone (ie me) who runs a 21" and has had a x1900xt and gtx and a utlra the GTX and the ultra would be over kill a 2900 pro is best bang for buck at that res highly clockable (most likey) and more ram than a GTS 320, so if i was you it be a toss between a 2900pro for about 170 or a gts 640 for more , a friends of mine E6600 setup gets just over 9k in 3d mark 06 with eveything at stock my rig is just below the 13k mark so u have afast card no matter which of the two you pic

Sorry about that :). Just had to.

Your card will be great for a lot of games at this resolution. I'm sure The Asgard put me right by telling me all the games he can play at 1920x1440 or 1920x1200 on his 320Mb 8800GTS.

although right now I have this annoying problem in that the monitor occasionally goes black then instantly comes back a second later

A GTX is not overkill for the res at all. (Neither is a Ultra since they are nearly the same cards)

Also why the hell would you have had a Ultra if you already once had a GTX? That's just stupid.

Whats the best card for UT3 at 1680x1050, to run at full potential. I know the game specs are not published but as Bioshock and other games use the Unreal3 engine.. Anyone got a rough idea?

Well I'd have to base that on current tech (Fastest cards available). If your loaded then get the Ultra, if not then the GTX is slightly behind it but a lot cheaper.

If you've got something to tie you over until about February 2008 then I'd hang on as the 8800GTX/Ultra's successor should be around. Even if you need a small upgrade now, you could try and pick up a X1950pro or a X2900pro for now and sell it when these new kind of beasts arrive.
