which gym should i join? i am ready to pay around 40 to 60 quid a month for a decent gym where hopefully i can avoid riff-raff and get a good ambiance and workout and relax.

I have been to Fitness First near my house and they are £60 / month premium membership which i can access their top clubs with which have swimming pools.

Kinetika seem a bit scummy, and I have yet to visit virgin active and LA Fitness.

Can anyone help recommend the right place?

( don't want to be using the weights and surrounded by former inmates of HMP Belmarsh, get my drift....?)

I can never justify paying that ammount for a gym, just find a standard local gym that isn't a branch like Fitness First/David Lloyd etc. Just make sure its a nice gym with decent kit and save yourself £30 a month

Any gyms that you are thinking of joining you would do best to check them out at the times you are thinking of using it. A gym I was at for a while was literally unusable at peak time at around 7pm, it was borderline dangerous so I just set up at home.

Also, as mentioned above look at the contract length etc as you may want to switch gym at some point.

i visited fitness first at 8pm when i will be using a gym, and it seemed very busy, i have 2 branches of fitness first in my area, one of them had a lot of big guys with big muscles and i thought i was in a zoo, but they seemed alright, the other branch had more corporate posh people, but the first branch smelled bad, i think the air-con was not working and it had more flights of steps to climb.

DW Fitness does not have branches in London. I live in SW London.

Visit the ones in your area and decide - even the chains can vary loads as you've seen.

Although maybe don't decide on the basis of how many flights of stairs you need to climb...

Is that as ironic as people trying to park as close to the front doors of the gym as possible?

I pay £16.00 (or as close as) for The Gym membership. It's the 24hr bit I like. Getting there at 5AM when there's hardly anyone else there is brilliant.

£16.00 and I never have to wait for equipment. Sure - there's some dodgy types in there but we all say Hi and keep it pleasant.

Suppose there's not much in the way of 'riff raff' round here :)

£60 a month? You're having a laugh.

I pay just over £20 at http://www.dwfitnessclubs.com

Spa, Pool included.

up norf?

lol that's what you get up there everything is cheap even the gyms
I remember once someone telling me they pay £10 a month for the gym some bodybuilder gym it was had needles all over the place...

@ OP - just go visit all of your local gyms and see which one works best for you.

my personal opinion is location - I prefer to be close to a gym, then what kind of equipment they got followed by price!

Behave ;). I park as close to the doors as I possibly can. When I leave, aching. I don't want to have to walk across a car park to get to my car. Especially when its cold outside.

I use Klick Fitness. essentially Re-Branded, Re-modeled fitness first. (All the advertising mail say fitness first on it) I pay £15 per month but there is a joining fee.

Just joined my local gym at £12.50/month. Not the most modern gym equipment but the More Energy membership also allows me to use the local University's facilities too.
