What handheld for my girlfriend?

In my experience you've got to be careful with the size of a handheld for your girlfriend. If it's too small she won't feel empowered enough to plough through with it, however too big and you risk scaring her off, fumbling around with it, and finally passing it back to you.

On that note may I suggest a 2DS.

DS:
- Final Fantasy III & IV (Especially IV)
- Chrono Trigger
- Pokemon series
- Phoenix Wright series (See Below)
- 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
- Castlevania games

3DS:
- Pokemon X/Y
- Animal Crossing
- Bravely Default
- Fire Emblem
- Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies (Visual novel game but has a demo on the eShop. Think she'll enjoy it from the sounds of it, it's quite anime in terms of its style)
- Virtue's Last Reward
- Zelda: Link Between Worlds/Ocarina of Time 3D

For the DS, don't forget Disgaea DS, The World Ends With You, Devil Survivor, the Dragon Quest games, Etrian Odyssey series, Radiant Historia and Lunar Knights.

There's an insane amount of JRPG stuff out there for her on that system. :)

Throwing in Suikoden Tierkreis for the DS too, it's very watered down compared to the first two games (and didn't think it was as good) but I still had a blast with it.

And Radiant Historia as well, but you'll have to import it as there was no PAL release (might find some sellers on Amazon/eBay that sell it in the UK though).

If you aren't overly bothered about the larger size, and you mentioned she isn't bothered about the 3D.

The 2DS might be a good option and they have reasonably better battery life than the the 3DS. You can also get one around £50 cheaper than a 3DS.

She is over the moon with the 3DS, gave it to her this evening.

Now I want one... I'm selling my AGS-101 model Gameboy Advance SP to fund it lol (MM).

Although... I'm tempted by the XL, which would you get? I'm not overly fussed about battery life as I always carry a Anker Pro 10k battery pack with it.

EDIT: Also, how trust worthy are ShopTo? How sure can I be they are selling me a brand new sealed 3DS rather than a refurbished one?

Get the XL without a doubt.

Is the size not a tad excessive? How bad is the stretch for DS titles over the large screen?

I use my phone for texting and phone calls, nothing else, all my apps and gadgetry is done via my nexus 7 (2nd gen), so having something large will just add more bulk. I'd rather have something smaller.

The Disgaea series is incredibly niche, not sure I'd mention it in the same breath as Dragon Quest etc.

They are one of, if not the biggest video games retailer and they don't sell new products as refurbished. Does any reputable retailer do that anywhere?? Seems overly paranoid that.

GAME sent me a game once that clearly came from the shop floor, no plastic wrap by the manufacturer, price sticker on it... with remains of a price sticker that used to be on it and in general just very scruffy :\ Was bought as "new" so hmm, maybe that counts? I mean it's not refurbished but it defo wasn't I was expecting anyway haha!

And ShopTo can be pretty good, I do like the roughly 5min dispatch after ordering and the sometimes webcam shot emailed to you of it packaged xD

Smaller to keep in your handbag?

I've got the 3DS and would choose the XL all the time, I get hand cramps from the 3DS. Not sure stretch would bother me all that much.

Their policy on changing home/delivery address is nothing short of a ball ache though :p
