What happened to the streets of rage type of game play?

I remember they were so much fun, walking the streets fighting the bad guys, good old side scrolling action, what i find odd though is that this style of game play is gone or at least not the same, i suppose you could say it's kind of around in games like gta but its really not the same.

One thing I just noticed on Playstation Network. Twisted Metal 2 is available!!!! I am sooo getting that. I know what you mean about streets of rage. Used to play that game for hours. A remake that didn't try too hard with the graphics like seems to be the thing nowadays would be good!

People got annoyed because the textures were low resolution, there was no polygons in the game, the sprites were 8 bit, the games had limited colour palettes, there was no downloadable content available, the sound effects were not in Dolby Digital, the ps3 ports suffered from frame rate issues, the 360 version did not have anti-aliasing enabled and some people found playing the game more than 5 minutes made 3 red lights appear on the front of their machines.

I used to love side scrolling beat em ups too - stuff like Final Fight and The Punisher. Awesome back in the day. Kind of repetitive now though :(.

Hell yeah!

I was thinking a similar thing the other day.

What with technology moving forward (As it does and quite frankly should) its becoming inevitable that some types of game play are becoming obsolete.

There are just some games that we will never see the likes of again. Fighting Force for example.

Used to love these games when I was a kid and had fond memories of them. However got Streets of Rage 2 on the VC a few months back and have to admit after 3 levels I was pretty bored as it was so repetitive.

I have 2 megadrives, one at my house and one at the parent's house, got 2x copies of Streets of Rage 2, 2x copies of Micro Machines 2, and 2x copies of Combat Cars, one for each house. They're a bit plain in singleplayer (been a year or two since I last played them on my own) but on two player they're still brilliant. Or 4 player in the case of micro machines :D
During uni, me and my mate played ridiclous amounts of SoR2 starting with 1 less life each time to see if we could still complete it. I still play the mega drive quite a bit, mostly streets of rage 2. I have version 3 but haven't played it for more than 10 minutes yet, despite the fact that I shelled out a good 25 quid for it on ebay about a year ago :o

Castle crashers looks like a good attempt at a side scroller so I look forward to that hitting the xbla soon, 4 player mode looks like great fun as well. More of theses titles would be cool but would they really sell at full retail price?

i LOVED that 3D PS game where you were wandering the streets beating the hell out of people and picking up guns/axes/grenades, infact ANYTHING you could get your hands on. but ive forgotten what it was called (you could be a really muscley bloke, a bird, or some other dude). either way, the sequel was crap as it had the best char from the previous game as some special agent..meh.

Vendetta is easily the best of this genre, pretty unknown too.......

Remember playing that, takes me back to the days when myself and a bunch of mates would spend every Saturday wandering the city centre blowing all our money in seedy back street arcades.

Do miss the old side scrolling beat em ups, Final Fight, Captain Commando and Growl were my favourites :).

I still play Streets of Rage 2 to this day. I always pick Axel and do his uppercut combo move on mobs, especially those ones in yellow/orange jackets with spikey haridos. They die exactly on the last punch on Normal difficulty, so it feels absolutely great. Weird I know!

Back on those days when me and my friends were little ones, we used to always call him Alex, lol

Me and you could so be like best friends and stuff. I hate those 'Y Signal' guys, they're always at that sliding thing and always grab you (except for Skate who is faster).
Always thought it had the worst-named collection of baddies ever, what with names like Donovan, Abadede, R. Signal, Jack, Bear Jr, wtf :p

It's amazing how back then we didn't think it was repetitive at all when people complained about assassin's creed like no tomorrow now.
