Im going into basic training at the end of the month for the navy, and hate anything regarding fitness - have no confidence lol...

So what happens if you fail the running fitness (1.5m run in 11:13) or the press ups and sit ups?

Do they send you home?

They bloody well should do, what kind of an attitude is that if you are joining the forces?

Get out running, it's not too late to up your fitness.

I'm young and can get fit very quickly if i let myself go for a few weeks or months 8-). Just do some running and push yourself.

I haven't exercised consistently in about 2 years and yet I know I can run that no problem. You'll be fine :)

1.5 Miles.......that's hardly difficult is it?

Have you seen some of the tubby chaps in the navy? If they can manage it, I'm sure you can too!

1.5 miles in 11:13 ? ... they must be easing up, it used to be 10:00 ... oh wait, now I see, you said 'navy' !

Have fun with that ;)

I am 34 and would comfortably run 1.5 miles in that time.

You should not fail that and it is not an unreasonable standard of fitness to ask.

And if Von was Chasing me with his work mates I'd do it an all. Get fit lad & good luck. :)

1.5 miles in 11:13 is nothing.. Heck you could jog half and walk the rest quickly and still make that on time.

Anyone who can't do that really has to look at their fitness levels seriously. We're designed to be a lot fitter then that. Our bodies are those of hunter gatherers, I don't expect people to have the equivalent level of fitness that goes with that but they should atleast try!

EDIT: With the good weather I've started running again and within 5 days I was easily comfortable with jogging 2 miles or more at a time at a pretty quick pace. Get out there and practice, within a week at most you'll be able to do it no problem, oh and give up smoking if you do or atleast cut back.

To give you an answer to your question though you'll probably be back troop/squadded, won't be discharged or anything unless you're REALLY crap lol. Go with a positive attitude and you'll get through.

they do send you home, just start running a couple of miles, google 'interval training', do that until ur exam an u will be fine

The 1.5 mile isnt untill week 5(along with the pressups and situps i believe) so i wouldnt be too worried as you will have plenty of fitness related training before hand, if you cant do it by week 5 then its not your fitness that is lacking, but your will. Even if you fail it then you have up to 2 weeks of remedial training (which goes into your free time, another reason not to fail as theres not much free time to start with) where they try improve your 1.5 mile time. Not everybody who joins up at the same time as you is going to be fit and there will be atleast a few people in the same situation as you. I could have what i said a bit mixed up as i cant remember too well, you do a 1.5 mile in your first week and you may be remedial training if you fail that, either way its achieveable.

I got a time of 9.27 for my 1.5 mile in raleigh which wasnt that bad and i did bugger all during phase 2 and at the end did my mile and a half again and got 8.54.....figure that out.

Overall there isnt really that much to worry about but it wouldnt hurt to start running a bit now, you've left it a bit too late but that extra bit of practice wont do you any harm.

As soon as you get through phase 1 training the rest is a piece of cake. I really enjoyed phase 2 and its so relaxed by comparison. Just keep your head down and try not to get into any trouble and the weeks should fly by.

edit: think it is week 6 like has been mentioned, dartmoor is week 5

I think something you have not considered is just how hard your basic training will be IF you are not fit enough to meet your time.

I assume your going to HMS Raleigh and for at least 6 weeks and while it may not be the Royal Marines style of training it is not exactly a picnic either and they will work you quite hard , oh and you would have to be a complete tub of lard not make your time AFTER 6 weeks of training.

The thing is if your level of fitness is ok to start with you will find that 6 weeks much much easier.

Good luck.
