What happens if you fail a fitness test at basic training?

Just remember, You may pass the Entry test but if its like down here after that they ramp it up some more and really make it hard

Just out of curiosity what is your swimming like? That can be a bit of a hurdle if its not at an acceptable level. If you went and did the acquaint course you should have a good idea what you have to do.

I really struggled with that but i started swimming afterwards so i didnt have a problem with it at raleigh. If you didnt do the RNAC and you're not a competent swimmer just stick to breast stroke and you cant really go wrong, trying to do the front crawl with overalls that are too big for you can be counter productive :p

Hi mate, my swimming isnt too bad really, so shouldnt struggle with that I wouldnt have thought.

Would you be able to tell me if anyone did fail anything and did they just have to retake it at a later date or something?

And if I read right , you do your running fitness test in week 5, so the training you have had prior to that should make you ok for the test I would assume. I thought for some reason you had to do it on day 2..... ??

Cheers mate, appreciate it :) (absolutely ******** it by the way!!!! :( )

Have you not tested yourself on a treadmill?

If i was you, Id set the treadmill to a speed that will finish the run just within the time.. If you feel okay, speed it up near the end. Dont burn yourself out early

Treadmills = Waste of time. They propel your legs backwards, so you're only putting in a small amount of effort compared to road running. Plus you can't really tell your speed, because it feels completely different outside.

When I did my training in the Army a long long time ago I had shin splints and was on anti inflammatories and had to strap my legs up and still managed it in under the 10 minutes (11:13 for the Navy ? ).
Its all in the mind, if you think your going to fail then you already have, be positive and run your heart out from the get go and try and stick to some one you know runs well.

You join the forces in a months time yet you still don't know if you'll pass basic?

Get a watch, put on some trainers and run.

I hope you never see combat.

Hahahaha!! (is that thread going to haunt me forever???)

And christ guys - im saying I have no confidence with fitness, not saying I cant do it... ;)
I don't understand =\
Confidence has nothing to do with fitness surely... Just get out there a train no? :p

Yes, but you've then got to "propel" your body forwards to prevent yourself falling off the back of the treadmill...

Agreed.

If it's the same as my time there, you'll get sent home for failing the swim, but they'll just beast you until you eventually pass the fitness. As already mentioned, it'll significantly eat into your free time if you have to keep going for remedial training.
You're going at the right time of year - Dartmoor is really nice in the spring.

I edited my post, i believe it is week 6(i could even be wrong there :p) that it takes place. You do do the mile and a half in the first week but its not the same as the one you do later on. I think you just have to get the same times you needed for the fitness test you took on the treadmill. I cant remember very well as it was almost a year ago and i wasnt too bothered with the fitness side of things throughout Raleigh. Either way its not an excuse to slack off, you still have a few weeks before you start so its worth putting a bit of effort in to make it easier for yourself

The exercise you do throughout Raleigh will certainly improve your mile and a half time but we still had a few people who didnt pass it and had to get remedial training. Its not the end of the world but you just do extra running twice a week and retry the mile and a half both times same if you cant do the pressups/situps. You have to have completed both by week 8 though as you cant pass out having not completed them.

From what i remember you dont get kicked out if you fail at that point either, you just get back classed and put in stonehouse but you dont want that to happen as you get put in with a different group of people who you dont know and you're stuck there for longer. I almost got put in stonehouse myself but that was because i had huge holes in both of my heels after pier cellars. Walking was agony for weeks after that, it took over 2 months for it to heal up.

Everyone else who starts at the same time will be in the same situation as you so there isnt really too much to be worried about, you might even find you wont have time to worry about things as youre usually kept busy there. Get used to standing still for long periods of time as theres going to be a lot of that, as well as ironing(i seemed to spend most of my time in the ironing room). You will have a senior class who will have been there for over a month who will help you with things, such as how to iron clothes for wearing, ironing to a4 and polishing your shoes. Dont worry about stuff like that now though as you will learn it when you get there. I couldn't iron to save my life before i started and i still passed out just fine

I remember some young guy in our division didnt even get to sign the document you get when you first start there (the one which states you cant leave in the first 4 weeks) as he lied about having a passport. Got booted out there and then. I think they like doing stuff like that just to appear intimidating, its all bs at the end of the day.

I can confirm they do not let you in if you aren't fit enough.

1.5m in 11 minutes is not particularly demanding for a youth your age.

How many press ups or sit ups do you have to do? That would be the bit that would knacker me :p

Not a lot, 23 pressups and 39 situps. I thought you had to do the harder marine style ones before you joined but its just regular pressups. Girls get to do them on their knees.

Are you going in as a rating or an officer?

For an officer in the navy you have to the BPFA when you go through AIB, and I'd assume that if you didn't meet the time it would count against your selection as an officer.

The fact is though that unless you have a medical condition not being able to run 1.5 miles in 11 minutes is just down to laziness and lack of exercise which is something that they will definitely drum out of you during training. If you are good in other areas I'm 99% certain they will allow you to continue training but you'll get sent on extra runs and your life generally made hell until you meet the required standards.

What time can you run in now? Sounds like you rarely exercise. After getting run over I didn't do any exercise for a year while my injuries healed themselves and although 'recovered' I was about as fit as a sack of potatoes. When I started running again with the aim of doing AIB My time for 1.5 miles was about 14.5 minutes! In 4 weeks I managed to get that to just over 10 minutes. If you're incredibly unfit to start with then it's amazing how quickly you can make massive gains. Sounds like you never exercise so get to it chap.

Sadly for me my elbow injuries were too bad so was told I had to resubmit my application one year after my latest operation which I had in February this year. So I'll be reapplying in 2010.

I can run 1.5mile on the flat in 11mins, and I'm both lazy and have a (current) lack of exercise and I'm very overweight.

There is no excuse. Get out and run!

Your numbers are correct, but you've missed out the very important fact that they all get done in time with a beep. This makes it much much more difficult.
