What happens in the WC cup if....

7. In the league system, the ranking in each group is determined as follows:

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above criterion,

their ranking shall be determined as follows:

b) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between

the teams concerned;

c) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the

teams concerned;

d) greatest number of goals scored in the group matches between the

teams concerned;

e) goal difference in all group matches;

f) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;

g) a play-off on neutral ground.

8. With the approval of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World

Cup™, the play-off may be played in one of the countries concerned.

If, after 90 minutes, this match ends in a draw, extra time of twice 15

minutes will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks

will be taken to determine the winner (cf. Art. 17, par. 2 and 3).

This is from the offical fifa rule book here the WC2006 rule book anyway

As I read it if all 4 teams are equal then they would play another group stage for that group. Meaning another 3 games each.

That's for qualifying though.

edit:

The system of play will be the league system, each team playing one
match against each of the other teams in the same group, with three
points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat.

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the

f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the
teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World
Cup™.

But if it's a group of four like this, and all four are dead equal, surely the only fair way to have play-offs would be to repeat all the group games again, which would waste far too much time? The only other way would be to have them randomly drawn and play two play-offs only.

Given the precise timeframe the finals have to be under, I'd have assumed random lots too.

Which competition is it that, as last measure, determines the team that progresses via its league standing :confused: Is that Champions LEague :confused:
WC qualification I think :)

No it isn't, world cup rules are 2 posts above mine.

I have taken the text directly off the worldcup offical rule book so my rule quotes are for the world cup.

I do presume that if FIFA publish a rules book thats states it is for the 2006 world cup then the rules containd in said rule book apply to the fifa world cup.

It's drawing of lots. Holland got done in 1990 with Ireland scraping through to the knockout phase on pure random luck :)
