What happens when I move files/folders to a shared folder?

Hi,

Well I got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium, my old laptop has XP Home. I made a new folder in Vista called 'Old laptop' and shared it. I then went onto the old laptop (with XP) and added it to 'My Network Places'. Then I moved pretty much all of my files and folders to the shared folder in 'My Network Places'. It all seems to be working fine, all of the files are being transferred as I write. However, I was wondering whether I will have a copy of my files/folders on both machines. I would have thought so, but I couldn't copy the information due to a lack of hard drive space.

So basically I want to know if the two laptops will both have a copy of the original files and folders on my old laptop. Also, do these shared folders synchronise automatically?

Thanks a lot for your help. :)

If you MOVED, then you MOVED the files. They are therefore MOVED and not copied.

You have ONE set of data that has been MOVED from one location to the other.

Ah but I have moved them to a shared folder, so I wasn't sure whether they would remain on the old laptop as well as appearing on the new one. I was thinking it might be like Windows Live Sharing, where you move something to your sharing folder and this is also sent to whoever you are chatting, therefore moving the data to another place on the laptop AND sending it to somewhere else.

I was seeking reassurance in case it stopped half way through transferring about 20GB of files.

Also what happens if I click Cancel when moving the files/folders, I will be able to recommence the transfer, right? (In fact it's around 32.53GB of stuff, going at about 1.45MB/s). Are there any settings I can chance during the transfer that will help to speed it up. The laptops are right next to each other on a 54Mbps network.

Putting things in a shared folder means that folder can be seen by other computers.

If you cancel midway through moving files it will only stop doing the remaining files, anything which has already been moved will stay moved.

So if I stop halfway the unmoved files will be fine, and the moved ones will be in the new location? Thanks :)

Didn't want to lose 30GB of important information. :p

Thanks again,
