What happens when you microwave a cup of milk with a spoon in it...

ach weeeel.... you'll only get arcing, if the spoon was too close to one of the sides of the microwave (or the top) however it is possible that you burnt out the magnatron

It can't simply be metal that's the problem. My microwave has a metal tray you can put in...

Does the tray have some sort of coating on it?

I so want to try out all these cool things with my microwave, but I fear I will be severely punished by means of physical beating and also starvation due to the fact I can only cook things that go in the microwave. :(

The metal shouldn't go in microwaves thing isn't quite that simple... have a read here: http://home.att.net/~mrmicrowave/docs/youcanusemetal.html

If it really was that simple... then they wouldn't make the inside of the ovens out of metal ;)

I've even used ours to heat tray containing a ferric chloride etching solution with a copper coated circuit board submerged in it, without ill effects (well other than a few yellow fingers from lifting the board out of the solution...)

Of all the things you can kill a microwave with, you choose the most boring. Next time, try a grape cut almost in half, with the halves joined with a tiny bit of grape skin. Or a CD/DVD - they're fairly impressive. Of course, the big daddy of microwave murders would have to be a firework or twelve (or generic explosive material) with a 5p coin placed near the fuse.

Not to be tried indoors. :D

I think an ostritch egg would go bang rather well. Brainiac might have been faking again, but this seems plausible to me:

Or a balloon filled with petrol and a spoon, perhaps.

At least you didn't put a baking potato in for 45 minutes like a mate of mine did.

Then you'd be minus a potato as well as a microwave :(

Did it explode or shrink to the size of a pea
If it was the former you should pierce said spud with a fork 1st & wrap a bit of kitchen paper round it.
