What has happened to the RPG?

Did they fix the awful camera in the expansion of NWN2? The game is unplayable as it is.

Not really, they tweaked it a bit but I never found it 'unplayable' anyway. It was servicable enough for me to enjoy the game. My only real gripe with NWN2 (not the expansion) was the buggy state it was in at release and the repetitive nature of act 1. MotB is a far better campaign.

The Baldur's Gate Compilation is a great package for the price constituting hours of gameplay and even better, a great story line.

As said, download some of the mods available, especially that tutu one.

Great games, enjoy them.

Is Icewind Dale any good, saw a similar boxset of that game and considered buying it?

I'd like something with the feel of Dungeon Master or Captive remade for the PC, and of course KOTOR 3 would be great (please not a MMORPG though).

Have Witcher sitting on my desk ready to be played though :)

I only played the original Icewind Dale. It's different in that you create your entire 6 person party and it is much more combat orientated.
Personally I didn't like it as much as the BG games.

I miss the RPGs like Xenogears and FFVII. Sadly we will never see those times again :(

Its all about high production values and games that last 8 hours max. Might aswell just watch a movie. Stories now come second...

Like with Mass Effect. Its a great game in its own right, its like a movie most part, but it just lacks what RPGs originally had. People are saying a possible GOTY, but it comes nowhere near the greats of old. I enjoyed Breath of Fire IV more than Mass Effect and to me thats saying something about where the RPG genre is going.

I just wish developers would stop leading the gaming market away from the movie market. Are we all so shallow we need things spoon fed to us with flashy lights and shallow stories?

Hopefully its only a phase and will pass once graphics reach a realistic limit. Then they will start to realise that its the actual game thats important.

I had NWN2 bundled free with my 8800GT. Is it worth a play or would you skip straight to MotB?

Yes, its definately worth giving the original a go. There has been a lot of patches since its release. Also check out the NWNVault site for tons of mods/haks. One I recommend is Tony K's companion AI mod. Which improves your party members AI greatly from the default.

MotB can be played first but bear in mind you will feel a bit overwhelmed if you haven't played any NWN games before. Its really an expansion set after the NWN2 OC and takes you into epic level play, lvl 18-30.

In response to the thread title. I would suggest that the ultimate RPGs came out in the form of NWN2 and Baldur's Gate, and no one has bothered trying to make something similar since....

It is also a marketing issue in terms of investment and return. These days everyone wants cutting edge graphics etc. If a team makes an RPG for this generation of PC hardware, they have to be sure they will sell enough to make a tidy profit. Unfortunately, 99% of PC Gamers are playing Counter Strike/Counter Strike Source, and COD 4/ COD 2....

I think you mean WoW. ;)

MMOPCRPGs are killing the single player variant. Not good for those of us that want a strong storyline and memorable characters.

I got NWN2 free with my GT too, however, I installed and patched, but when I start it up it kind of gets stuck in some kind of loop switching between game and desktop, and I can't get into the game.

Does anyone here have the latest betas from Nvidia? The .25's? If so, can you start the game?

And yes, it is all patched up.

Is there any RPGS in development?

And i dont mean a FPS-RPG hybrid....i mean a real party-based rpg. Where is the rpg now? Does every game have to be an fps to sell????

I think the last one was NWN2 and add-ons. Does no-one else do them??

In reply to the original post, i'd say take a look at ..... wait there is no RPGs in production.

Oblivion is a good RPG, it takes nearly a day and 4gb of mods to make it work roughly the way it should, but it has its moments.

Maybe the future of RPG's is remake of the classics, 3D version of BG1-2 with a good graphics engine?

Maybe Valve will enter the RPG market and blow us away with some truly amazing stuff (just played Hl2: Ep2 and loved it).

At the moment what the market considers RPG is a loose wrapped version of what a RPG should be, HUGE story, lots of detail and in depth characters, great lore, great playability, then add the make-up.

There's a massive ongoing debate on Bioware's forums about whether full voice-overs for dialogue, more detailed graphics and better animations are killing the plot by severely limiting the amount of content they can fit into the game. Planescape: Torment for instance is probably the wordiest game ever made - if Black Isle had done a full voice-over for all that dialogue it would probably have bankrupted them!
