What have i done!

Played halo 3 its okay but a bit short it seems however im on level 5 just starting it and needed to go out and thought its okay theres an autosave/check point thing so turn it off and when i came back i started it up and it takes it to the end of level 1 so help

any ideas

You played through to level 5 without a single "save and quit", then turned the machine off?

If that's the case, you may well be scuppered

If you've completed levels 1-4 you should be able to select them from the menu, not continue campaign.

aye well end level 1 till half way (ish?) through 5

you're screwed.

each time you reach a checkpoint it DOESN'T save the game, it just marks the point where you restart should you get killed.

you should do a save and quit from the pause menu to actually save the game. trying to choose the level to play from won't work either because you didn't save the game.

It doesn't suck at all. It's the way Halo works and has done since the first game.

The OP should have done a quit and save, simple as that.
