what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

Treated myself to a pair of Sony WH1000 XM6, upgrade from my XM3 that are on the way out.

Noticeably better ANC, had a flight last week and they do such a good job of tuning out everything.

General audio quality is also a step up.

New case is really nice. Got the blue version which looks great. The soft touch plastic feels nice. Good adjustability.

New sounds it makes on turning on and off make it a bit hard to figure out if you’re turning it on or off when you’re not wearing them. Minor gripe.

The multi-device connectivity is magic. Connected to my phone and MBA, watching YouTube on the laptop, then start playing music on the phone, it pauses YouTube and music starts playing, very nice.

Just ordered a pair of Sennheiser HD 569 as much for phone calls as listening to music.

Random call from Richer Sounds saying they have just randomly received a pair of Susvara so can pop down any time to demo them. That's Sunday sorted then :D

This guy reviewed the X9 and found the HD800S is basically transformed, sub bass now present, better dynamics etc, Sennheisers are headphones typically that scale with higher end amps and EQing, seems the 800S really benefits, meanwhile Arya Unveiled needs no EQ according to him, which is what I have found with the earpad modded Arya Stealth too.

I've read that so many times that the HD 800 is massively improved with the right amp, particularly tubes. More so than the HD 6x0 and having had that experience of the HD 6XX on the APOS Gremlin a dinky, budget, hybrid tube amp I'm 100% a believer. The other pair that seems to get nearly as recommendations as the HD 800, or 6x0 on better amps is the DT 880 600ohm.

It's true of all headphones obviously but it seems some pairs have more a synergy with certain gear than others.

good honest review, he noted that the Phonitor performed better when feeding it the X9 as a dedicated DAC as it should, great amp that but poorer performing DAC by todays standards, I nearly choose the Phonitor myself but didn't want to feel I was paying extra for the internal DAC that I'd never use.

Yea, the other thing that I hadn't realised is that you can access the X9 over it's IP address in a browser. That means no reliance on maintenance (or lack there of) if the mobile app no longer works. Very cool and removes a worry with it.

As an aside my current adventures in 'headphones I don't own' includes the HD 660S2. I've been thinking over these, still not sure if I really want them, but given even in sales then tend to sit close to their £399 street price thought I'd have a look at auctions for them. Particularly after my good fortune in landing the iFi Zen Signature stack and Topping D10 Balanced this year.

Attempt 1 - talking to someone on eBay about an unboxed pair for £187 and they sell as I'm typing away. Possibly as a offer of £180. Ironically the seller was explaining why the 600 was the only 6x0 they were hanging onto.
Attempt 2 - soon after a another auction ends for £240. Wasn't sure from the pictures on this one, but even so was going to bid.
Attempt 3 - this morning a fairly minty looking example goes over my maximum at £260. Given they sell for £285 refurbished + 2yr warranty from Sennheiser UK I didn't want to get too close to that price, otherwise you lose that 'bargain' feeling.

So I might just bite the bullet and get a HD 600 to complete the classic HD 6x0 line. And answer the neutral sound vs. warm sound. It's interesting how sometimes things feel like fate steers you a certain way.

I don't think the 660S2 was ever worth its £400 rrp, there's a bit more bass, but that's about it having bought and returned them. I had the FiiO K7 at the time so plenty of power to drive them and felt my modded HD650 sounded too close for comfort yet cost half as much. Same headphone housing and pads obviously so naturally they felt exactly the same otherwise.

Personally think £250 maximum is what they should go for new, so £200~ used/open box is a great deal to have much of the sonics of a modded HD650 out of the box.

The earcups are way too small now though after spending so long on the big cups of planars, ears feel physically cramped in the HD6XX line when I put them on.

I did...honest, guv 'nor!

Apologies in this case it clearly took a few attempts for that bit of info to stick. To be fair there is a lot to cover with the X9 so I must have missed it.

Technically the RRP is £499 on the HD 660S2, but it does appear between £389 & £399 on the biggest etailers. I feel a few of the Sennheiser headphones; HD 490, 550/505, 620 are all a bit overpriced and if you lop about £50-100 off their 'street price' you're probably there, or thereabouts. Certainly a £299 660S2 would be more competitive with what's around it. So I can't argue with you on the price point, it feels too much. The £180 pair were under a year old, with a custom Sky Audio cable so bit of a steal in that sense.

That's fair. I've very much realised that weight is a big contributor to comfort for me. So in that sense although not perfect there's a lot I like about the 6x0 in terms of comfort.

On this rare occasion I agree with MRK on the 660S2's, (when two internet enemies agree heads should turn!!), they are not worth it, HD600/HD650/6XX is better imo, if you want to go down the Senn route the HD460 Pro is a good shout, probably one of Sennheiser's better releases in recent times, a good thing about the HD460 is that it comes with 2 pads, a cloth 'mixing' pad, and a velour 'producer' pad, this can really help by providing you with two very different tunings.

Or just stick with the bargain price to performance HD600/650/6XX line!

I hadn't noticed... :p

It's the gotta catch 'em all in me. I've already got the 58X, 650 and 6XX already and I adore them for music.

You can get some bargains second hand, but on this occasion I missed them all. I've read countless times the 600/650/6XX are the stars of the show, but you never really know unless you try them of course. To be honest headphone wise I've already got too many.

I think I also had the HD6XX from a Massdrop run one time but vaguely remember selling them on as the HD650 sounded the same, or maybe it was the AKG K7XX, or maybe both, it's been so long and I've had so many cans I never kept track like I did with GPUs.

HD600 seems to be the default choice when people are talking about that class of HD, I missed the run with those, would have wanted the OG models with the matte textured finish not the later model glossy finish.

Isn't that the other way round? The OG are glossy with like a marble pattern, the current ones are matter black and no print on the plastic.

For me...I prefer the HD580 over the HD600, they sound the same though but the pads/headband are more broken in and thus more comfortable.

Oh I thought the OG was matte marble pattern whilst the later ones made in another country were glossy. Hmm

Yep 6XX is the 650. There are small few who will argue otherwise, but that's not the case. My 6XX is ever so slightly different in the treble, but within the pad differences etc. I just prefer the colour scheme of the 6XX.

You do see lots of second-hand HD 6x0 including the odd marble variant. I do think they look great although that said I quite like the newer 2019 onward chamfered edge design of the newer 600/650/660S2. You often see people suggest those are cheaper plastic, but I'd argue otherwise based on the 6XX/58X vs. my 650.

I got mine at around like 2002 I think? It’s so old it was before I got my Gmail account which is why I can’t find the receipt.

It is this one in this review. It’s gloss with marble.

Some people don’t even know that exist as it’s all about the matte black one now.

The current HD 600 are the basically very similar to 650 silver/grey. Just the latter has a shinier finish.

The only matte black/very dark grey, is the HD 660S1 & 2. Then the two drop varients have their own schemes (shinny glossy black and very dark blue).

Unless I've missed understood what you both mean by current one?

The marble 600s do look lovely.

Yep that's the original HD600, made from parts of an old Jaguar's dashboard!

HD6XX and HD650 (latest version, a lot of people say that the originals were darker sounding) are the same as far as I can tell, a few people seem to think otherwise, I still think to this day the HD600 is the best headphone of their line.

Main issue with HD650/6XX is the effect that pad wear has on the sound, if used regularly some people recommend changing the pads on a 6 monthly basis although I personally think that is a bit extreme but measurements of old vs new pads on the HD650/6XX have sometimes shown quite a difference in FR,

Here you can see a 10dB difference in the 5kHz region which will be very noticeable, always worth replacing old pads on the HD650/6XX to give it a new lease of life.
