What, if any, upgrade for my son?

My son likes playing PC games, he loves his PC, never asks for new kit or anything just content with what he has. He plays/has played TF2, Bioshock series, Killing Floor, Red Orchestra, Cupheads, The Walking Dead, Portal, Mafia, Stanley parable. A mixed bag.

He currently has a 6600k, 8GB RAM, Radeon 6970. At present it does everything he wants it to. Only running at 1080p. He has a basic BenQ monitor but gets the job done, Cloud II heaphones. His keyboard/mouse are pretty **** no-name stuff (paint has came off the mouse). He does not complain though and it does all he wants it to, still whoops my *** in games.

Have been scratching my head for a few months for a christmas present for him, he says all he would like is some games and that is it which is nice and all but I would like to get him something else but really struggling with ideas.

He really isn't a "I want, I want" kid, I just want to get him something more than just "games" but he loves his PC.

I was looking at a ultra wide monitor, maybe a decent keyboard/mouse. I know a new GPU is a good shout but as the one he has does all he needs, it will not really feel like getting anything if you put in a new GPU and everything is just like it was, if that makes sense.

Any ideas from the faithful here please?

Thanks.

@Gimpymoo
it seems he might of reached the age of wanting it to look "pretty" but im sure he wouldn't mind it running the best or giving him the best game play!

As you mentioned , screen - ultra wide is great for Racing and RTS though i think most FPS gamers still stick to standard ratio

not sure on your budget but

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £490.68 (includes shipping: £11.70)

if not just the screen and card later - being able to run over 60hz - 100hz + and sync screens makes a massive difference when gaming- specially if he's playing fast pace games

I wouldn't mess around with his system unless he asks for it tbh.
Get him games, or give him money to choose his own.
Steam sale tomorrow, get him to pick something.

Since you mentioned the mouse/keyboard you could go for new ones there. An RGB keyboard with a mouse would provide a nice asthetic upgrade, check the offers since there are some decent mice below £40 and perhaps a RGB mechanical keyboard around £100 (or standard for about £30-50). You could also add a steam voucher for games.

I thought 21:9 was perfect for FPS?

@nzaptx I agree about the keyboard and mouse. A good keyboard/mouse can be appreciated by anyone I think as they can make an immediate difference. Any recommendations?

No mention of budget :)?

GPU + Monitor (1440p monitor + appropriate GPU would be a very nice upgrade)
Nice keyboard and mouse
Has he got an SSD drive? They make a PC much more pleasurable to use.
RAM upgrade, 8gb is borderline these days.

i could be wrong, you'd get good angles - not sure if Red Orch supports ultra wide? e-sports and such still stick with 16:9 , but guessing thats purely down to refreshs speeds. though i dont think your son would mind either standard or ultra wide screen - though GPU will start to struggle with the extra pixels .

His birthday is a few months after Christmas so a GPU could be on the cards for then.

He is a kid so "e-sports" is of no interest, just wants to play games have fun and my thinking was that 21:9 would add more "fun" compared to a "faster" 16:9.

true, hard one as depending on your gaming type reflects how you like your set up. You'll have to put it smoothly as , "would you rather when playing be seeing a faster smooth gameplay or a wider point of view " - or make it out that your undecided and ask him what i'd go for .... ;)

My nephew loves his Razer keypad. OCUK do not have the Razer Chroma available in stock, but I'm sure it's available elsewhere.
