Yeah, the last decent version of Norton was 2003. 2004 onwards, it went down the drain.
For me, it's Avira for virus detection and Spybot/HJT/Spywareblaster for spyware detection.
Have you seen the new 2010 version or read reviews/independent tests regarding it? The new versions are much more lightweight and score highly for speed and also for the amount of malware they detect. Av-Comparatives has it as the top scorer in their latest tests.
Just because it was bad in the old days, doesn't mean they can't fix it and it looks like they have listened to people at last and noticed their products had become a joke among IT people. I am a die-hard Avast user but gave their new 2010 AV a go and it is definitely much more lightweight than their old versions and installed in seconds.
More importantly it also UNINSTALLS fine which previous Nortons proved hard to do! You could never get rid of them. I have moved back to Avast not becaue it is faster or more secure (Norton scores more highly than Avast in tests all round the web) but because Avast is free and Norton is damn expensive per year (£40 or something for a 3-user licence and we have more than 3 machines at home!).
In the end it came to just getting the best free one I know about so went back to Avast and just use other tools like Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, etc to hopefully pick up any nasties that Avast may have missed.
To be honest, keyloggers are my main concern and none of the anti-virus programs pick up most of the commercial ones available. All I can hope is that the way people deliver them triggers the AV and stops them installing. Once they are installed if you run a scan it may not even detect it which is the only thing I worry about so hopefully malwarebytes, etc can scan for commercial keyloggers that people may have packaged in other software if they get passed the AV.
