Hi,
I would like to make a internet site and I have a few question maybe you can answer.
To be honest I dont have much of a clue about this.
I know I have to register a Domain, but then what.
Have to get an FTP aswell dont I?
Could someone tell me where I go from there?
What would I create the site in? Is it all HTML.
How much would I expect to pay?
And also I would eventually like to create a forum.

a lot of Questions I know but please give me a hand.
Thanks a lot in advance people.

Nathan

i signed up www.dreamhost.com with promotion code "HOST95" few days ago

£52 for 2 years Level 1 crazy domain level, 20GB storage, 1TB transfer per month. very simple to setup website, joomla, phpbb forum, web blog by "one click install" via control panel. u get 1 free domain, email and FTP. everytime u install any software by "one click install" u'll get email from them explaining how to setup, what to do next etc etc.

i got my website, forum and web blog all up running in less than 1 hour  didnt expected it would be quick and easy, i was just like you few days ago.

very good :D

So your saying even though I don't really ahve a clue I should just get a domain and learn as I go along?
Thanks

yep!

before i signed up few days ago, i know NOTHING about internet sites, forum, web blog etc.

i've learnt so much in last few days :D good fun! if u make mistake on forum and want to start again, no problem as u "click" to remove phpbb forum and u "click" to install fresh forum again. sooooo simple

Lol, I really don't feel to comfortable doing that lol.
What do I pay for aswell?
A domain,
Storage,
What else?
I dont exactly know what I would be buying and £52 for starting seems a bit steep.

Thanks.

before i found the promotion code, i was unsure to pay $7.95 X 24months = $190

but when i found the promotion code HOST95 (u can use it) i instantly sign up and knocked $95 off :D

www.ochostreview.co.uk contains reviews on a bunch of hosts from £2.99/month (for a decent one, iirc). Might be better to go for a monthly contract if you're not sure :)

Most hosts will have auto-installers in their control panel for things like forums and blog software. For example, www.twobeds.com was created by a couple of clicks in my control panel to install Wordpress, which is blog software (though I've modified it a bit).

For forums, popular free choices are YaBB and phpBB as well as SMF, and these can also be quickly/easily installed, sometimes through the host's control panel system.

But basically to start off with you need a hosting account and a domain name (though some hosts will also let you use a subdomain, for example something.thehostsname.com). 99.9% of hosting accounts will provide FTP access to upload and download files as well as POP/SMTP e-mail accounts (to get your e-mail through Outlook) or a webmail interface.

Whats wrong with using your ISP free webspace ? I get 200meg, You can even use Internet explorer as FTP client, just type in ftp:// yourname ISP etc

Thanks a lot people.
Any reccomandations for a monthly deal instead?
And do they do Paypal since my age?
Don't have a credit Card and don't want to use my 'Rents.

Thanks

i'm not sure what's subdomain.

ie, my domain is www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com if i want to use my forum in its own subdomain, www.forum.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com

that's subdomain?

you're with dreamhost?
Yup, literally a sub-domain, ie anything before the main domain, and you can have mulitple levels of subdomain too:

test.domain.com
www.test.domain.com
something.domain.com
lots.of.subdomains.domain.com

Infact 'www' is a subdomain really, since the actual domain is only the 'domain.com' part, but that's just being picky :p

i believe he's with a company called Vidahost. same as me. highly recommended
Cheeky thing, you know full well I run said group, now I'm gonna have to get a Don to tidy up :p

hi

just wanted to say ... have a look at ochostreview. what you need is some friendly support, if and when you need it. gigs of space is useless except for massive forums or corporate sites.

just my opinion

Ok, so I think I'll go with Vidahost since they accept Paypal and have a good rating.
Starter package. 8.99 with setup for first month. Not bad just to try out and see if I like it.
But how would I go about setting it up?
Lol, I really wouldn't know the next step.
Should I just go ahead and buy it and the rest will be obvious?
Thanks a lot for allllll your help :)

EDIT - Yeah I agree Blade, these are the specs of the starter package.
  • 350mb space
    25GB transfer
    10 POP/SMTP/IMAP E-mail accounts
    20 subdomains
    20 MySQL databases
    5 add-on and parked domains
    10 FTP accounts

EDIT again - Does this also buy me my Domain?
Thanks

Ok,
So another Q
Where would I design the site?
In Frontpage, or is it like a wizard similiar to free sites eg Freewebs.

#Thanks
