What involved in creating a site?

i never tried frontpage. but i know that dreamweaver is OK for simple stuff

if you've got time and patience though it's better to use notepad. this is how I got started ...

I went to a site called oswd (a place where you can download templates). I had a look at a few, downloaded one I liked. and then just experimented with it by changing the html, like replacing their text with mine, then replacing their image with mine, adjusting the size of a box, turning bold on a piece of text.

and then I learned more and more .....

So I'll pay the 7.99 and see how it goes.

Thanks and I'll post back with how it goes.

KK,
Im installing Word Press and Ive got to step 5.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

Do I have to wait for my domain to be set up.
In the email it says up to 48 hours for the internet to "catch up".
Is there not an alternative way for me to log on?

I installed it to the root directory so it tells me to
If you installed into the root directory of your web site,
you would visit http://example.com/wp-admin/install.php.

This is what it says in the email:
As domain names take upto 48 hours to be properly setup, you can use the IP address '69.93.55.52' as the FTP host address to begin uploading content to our servers before the domain is correctly configured, so your site is ready as quickly as possible.

Thanks

hi

the 48hrs is for the internet to "roll-over" so when you buy your domain name it goes into a queue. Then when the internet does a batch update of new names ... a "roll-over", then yours gets added. Maximum of 48hrs.

like you've seen you can use your space now ... it's just that it's only an IP address until the internet roll-over occurs.

I don't know about the wordpress installation, email them.

The internet isn't an object, it's just a collective term for a group of inter-connected networks. The 48 hour period is how long (estimated, of course) it takes for the new information to propagate around the majority of DNS servers (I have a limited knowledge of the DNS system, so I'm probably simplifying this quite a bit). How long it takes for the changes to become apparent to you depends on your DNS server (most probably run by your ISP), how often the records are updated etc.

This is why, if in 24 hours time the domain is still not resolving for you, you ask someone using a different DNS server it may well work for them :)

Ok, So is there anyway of me opening this file without having to wait the maybe 48hrs?

It takes much, much less than 48 hours now :)

Meh, I just deleted that Wordpress, Ill wait till everything like the domain is ready.

Is there anything I can actually do in the meantime?
How do I actually go about designing the site?

Thanks :)

Just uploaded some stuff but it doesn't come up on there :S

Are you sure you're uploading the files to your public folder (htdocs, www, public_html or anything like that?). Have a root around in your FTP application to see if you've uploaded them to the same directory as the existing files are in :)

Meh, silly me.
Thanks dude ;)

EDIT - So I installed Word Press.
But wtf does it actually do lol.
Do I edit the site through that?
thanks
