What is <3 mean?

People seem to be putting "<3" in many of their names/nicks and even in sentences, mostly in online games.

What on earth does "<3" mean stand for? :confused:

And surely <3 represents a child that has been treated to a double scoop ice cream only to drop it on the floor

Actually that notation is used in more languages than just c/c++.

It's just another way of writing 3, much like 9/3 == 3.
