I don't know why the manufacturers don't just drop the 'semi' part & just call them automatics & be done with it because the end result is just the same i.e both versions have no clutch pedal & the car will change gears as required automatically or you can select gears yourself.
The DVLA views both types as automatic so someone who has only passed their test in an automatic can still drive a semi simply because it has no clutch pedal & the car can't be stalled, however they won't 'creep' & will roll back on a hill so it should still need a bit of tuition I would think
