What is controlled folder access Windows Security?

I have come accross an option called 'controlled folder access' on Windows Security - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/controlled-folders?view=o365-worldwide

I have enabled it but it's very frustrating as pretty much after any app update or even taking photos in games it comes up with a notification saying the access was blocked and I have to go into Windows Security to allow the process.

Do I actually need it enabled as it's incredibly frustrating having to do this all the time? Is it enabled at default, I can't remember? I am a home user.

Thanks!

Don't think this is enabled by default (except perhaps system folders) in home or Pro.

The last bit of that article is probably what you are looking for, remove the common folders that are giving you grief. Obviously you won't benefit from any of the "added protection" from ransomware, however good that is...

View or change the list of protected folders

You can use the Windows Security app to view the list of folders that are protected by controlled folder access.

  1. On your Windows 10 or Windows 11 device, open the Windows Security app.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Ransomware protection, select Manage ransomware protection.
  4. If controlled folder access is turned off, you'll need to turn it on. Select protected folders.
  5. Do one of the following steps:
    • To add a folder, select + Add a protected folder.
    • To remove a folder, select it, and then select Remove.
