As per title,

I currently use a Seasonic X series 650w PSU, this is pretty old, and pre Haswell. I think it may be responsable for some odd shut down issues I have such as restarts or occasional 05 sleepstates instead of powering off when I click shut down.

So as I intend on getting a new GPU, most likely a GTX 1070, I am also considering a shiny new PSU within the 550w to 650w range, as efficient and quiet as possible with the additional option of Cablemod compatability, fully modular.

What are the current recommendations?

If you want cablemod compatibility, then I'd get either an EVGA G2 650W or a G2 550W (which OCUK don't stock). They're fully modular Superflower built units that can be used with the Cablemod or Bitfenix Alchemy braided PSU cable kits.

Hmm.

I thought it may have been the later X-Series that was compatible, not my older model.

My Seasonic X-650 is the 1st generation bought 1st December 2009, I was sure it had been revised pre Haswell and that was what had been tested. Could be wrong.

My issue is that, sometimes I click shutdown, but sometimes the system instead restarts, sometimes a few times in a row, other times it simply goes to sleep with a 05 code on the motherboard, sometimes it does as it is expected and shuts down as asked.

Completely random but pressing shut down will always give me one of the three options above. And due to being unable to get an answer some time back from Asus I assumed PSU specification.

From what I have read - 05 - OEM initialization before microcode loading - what is causing it I don't know.

If you look at RealHardTechX below it also says Haswell Compatible for both versions of the X series.

If by any chance the psu wasn't haswell compatible then you could just disable the low power states (C6/C7) in the bios. They might be disabled by default but worth a look.

Is your bios up to date ? You could also try clearing CMOS. Just be aware that it will remove any overclock settings so make a note of them if applicable.

Seasonic Prime is what I've been looking at getting, they are pricey but imo the best and have a 7 year warranty. £150 over 7 years = £22 a year.

Seasonic Prime has a 10 year warranty. I personally wouldn't pay that much for a psu but each to their own.

Depends how much the system is worth, if it wasn't for my 1070/BX100 I couldn't care less really for this system, but if you have spent £1500 on the rest of ya PC why not get the best unit to power it?

Just seen a review of the Prime 650W on Toms - looks like a stellar performer. Most efficient unit they've put through their lab to date.

Agreed - I just placed my order for the Seasonic Prime 850W 80 Plus Titanium - I too saw an excellent review at KitGuru:

Top performers, very smart looking, and cables are all flat into the bargin - perfect..........except for the steep price!, but then you get what you pay for - lol

Because it is just spending money for the sake of it. There are excellent units such as the Leadex Gold/G2 and Corsair RMx/RMi etc which will do exactly the same thing at half the cost.

Well I guess there is life in the old PSU yet.

I actually have a spare Cooler Master V-1000 that was for dual GPU set up I didnt use, but overkill for this system I guess.

New PSU may still be on the cards, I have two spare 7950 and two other PC's with lesser cards, though only a 450w Corsair modular PSU for one of them. I either use the 1000w or buy a new 550w plus and pass the X-650 onto the Z97 I plan on putting together for the kids.

I got a RM550X after reading great things about it. It lasted 2 week of very few use.. I just got the replacement, I hope it lasts longer.

While it worked it was very silent though.
