what is faster laptop cpu?

this is for a gaming laptop and will be coupled to a nvidia gtx 460m gfx card?

Well the 620 has 2 cores, 4 threads while the 740 has 4 cores, 8 threads.

I would say go for the 620M, it turbos to 3.33ghz and most games only use dual cores, the hyperthreading should help with some of the games that uses more the two cores.

Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 540M(2.53GHz,3MB cache)

i maye get crossfire 5870m cards would quad be better at feeding into to crossfire?

Looking at the specs, it's very similiar to the 620M, just with slower clocks and 1mb less cache. Should still be pretty decent for gaming.

Nope. A SB CPU will have the number 2***, the 2 showing it's the second generation of the i series.

They perform better per clock compared to the Nehalem series, so if you can get your hands on one then yes.
