What is freesync?

Only non-laptop panels I know of that currently support it (theoretically) are high end panels used for instance in air traffic control i.e. 5 figure sum prices for example Raptor SQ2804.

(I've never actually tested if it works :p so don't go out and buy one).

I'm disappointed in you , You should take one for the team so to speak and find out :p

Not really interested in either at the moment tbh - happy enough for now with 120Hz vsync off and 125fps cap (minimizes percieved tearing and mostly attainable except in the odd game).

Not for the first time :p

Second time on these forums I think - not bad when you consider you did it thrice in this thread alone :D.

I always try to take care to read what people have said. Unless it's a DM WoT in which case I just start reading the next post down :D.

Exactly what I think with regards to my own interest.

Nope. your misreading my posts. ;)

You can't judge gsync pricing as a whole based on the one Asus unit, that at this moment in time isn't even an out of the box gsync unit, its also in short supply (the diy units) and have added labour charges to for the thing on top. Gibbo has already said the benq gsync units won't cost much if anything more then the units they replace.

Similarly for the as yet unreleased Asus swift, pricing will be high but that's likely not due to gsync, more its a one of a kind monitor and Asus will charge what they want due to lack of competition.

Will freesync be free in the same way that AMD 3D is "free"?
e.g. Looking at the list of 3D supported monitors on AMD's website, they are all more expensive than an Asus/Benq monitor with 3D Vision kit included

Free sync is a feature which recently got approved into VESA DP 1.3 standard and will probably be available mid to late 2015, that controls variable v-blank and main function is to reduce overall power draw.

G-sync is a module built into TN that controls variable vblank and is capable of holding a frame long enough in order for the GPU to render in sync, and is available now with the price included. The scaler chip should eventually allow for a broader choice in monitors supported.

Or if you're more of an AMDFTW type, one is free and the other isn't(despite you'll obviously need a new monitor that has Display Port 1.3), and that's all that matters lol.

With regards to FreeSync, I'm sure I read somewhere (might have been this forum, so who knows how accurate it was) that people don't have to implement VESA standards and in a lot of cases they actually have to pay to be allowed to support them. If this is on a feature-by-feature level then companies may have to pay/license the V-BLANK DP-1.3 stuff. This may actually cost them and in that case I'd imagine they'd pass the cost on to us. Now since it's unlikely they'll do 2 versions of the monitors it could be hard to tell if they are more expensive or not because of this feature. Just be cause we can't tell doesn't mean they won't be. I'd guess it won't cost as much as the extra Nvidia hardware though, Cheaper-Than-Nvidia-Solution-Sync is probably less catchy than Free-Sync.

Personally until someone can show me 2 version of a monitor, one with FreeSync and one without, I won't be convinced that there is no additional cost at all for having the new technology. Even then I'd question if they've just raised the price of the monitor without to make it seem like that. So what we'll need is an existing monitor on the market to then be released with no changes other than the new tech so that we can tell if it's actually free.

Similarly, looking at the AMD website, the only listed 3D monitor I can find for sale is the 27" Samsung at £450... The cheapest nvidia 27inch with 3d vision kit is £350... So not quite sure on what AMD's definition of "free" is when it comes to monitor tech

I think it's fairly obvious that free sync monitors will have an additional cost at first. But as it's independent from AMD people will just blame the monitor manufacturers or retailers while sitting in their ivory tower :p.

While I don't think FreeSync is going to work out as rosey posey as perhaps Humbug is making it seem (Because it's AMD, to be blunt)

I don't disagree with how he's wording Gsync currently.

There, as far as I'm aware of is currently one Gsync monitor upgraded kit, the ASUS VG248QE

And the upgrade seems to whack it up 200 quid (Even if you DIY it's still going to cost a flipping ton, that 200 dollars will likely end up at 150 quid,)

Neither Freesync nor Gsync seem to be anything other than noise right now.

It's best to absolutely separate AMD from 3D, it's just their usual noise without substance, their list is meaningless, so is their "AMD H3D"

Cost me 160 for my 120HZ Samsung 3D monitor I run with an AMD GPU (Not that it's anything to do with AMD)

I thought most would know that AMD has no involvement in 3D monitors and that they only list monitors that they have tested.

Probably because AMD don't do anything bar enabling their hardware can output 3D, it's not as if they actively support 3D or anything, they leave that for individual title dev support/Tridef, therefore it's 'free' as there is no extra outlay on AMD's end to enable 3D.

3D HDTV's/any native 3D panel can output on AMD, its not just the monitors on the website.

@martini, you were bumped, mines cost £30 less.:p
