What is in your boot?

Nothing apart from the Spare Wheel and Jack.

I guess I need to stock up...what do I need exactly in case of breakdown?

I guess:-

Engine oil (any kind in particular?)
Bottled water
High Vis Jacket (sensible)
Blanket
1st Aid kit.

Hopefully it fit under the secret compartment by the spare wheel. The boot compartment above the wheel is current empty atm and it's nice if I can keep it that way.

Not much

but then again the wheel well on the volvo is huge. All of the above fits in there with room to spare.

Electric tyre pump. I should really keep some warm clothes in the boot seeing as the heater is rubbish and they would be very useful if I ever broke down.

Small 12v hoover
Some carrier bags with bits & bobs in.

A lot of people carrying oil...never really felt the need. I check the dip stick regularly and top up as appropriate at home. I can't see when I would need it on the run.
