What is it with all this new hardware hype!?

People spend hundreds of pounds becasue technologly for me is like an addiction, i need new gadgets to play around with. I justify spending that amount by not spending loads of money on clothes....etc

It's true. There's just something about freshly boxed hardware...

True, when i upgraded my old old rig i was ecstatic about it all! But the thing is, if i suddenly had a grand available to me i would most likely splash it all out on all the latest bells and whistles.

i didnt play crysis at very high, becasue of DX9, but at 90% high it runs fine

and yeah i guess it would be even better on new hardware, but as the young'un i am i cannot possible afford so much as a ram upgrade, so its all good!

LOL so you're basically slating off people for having top spec pcs because you can't afford them!?

If it works fine on your pc then good for you but there's no need for your post as the majorities here are enthusiates who find thrills in new hardware and playing games at top quality and smooth framerate.

I have only 17 background processes running, and my 7900GS was one of those pre over clocked ones - its at 600/1600 (link here), my 4000+ is at 2.7Ghz and ram at 460.

If you suggest a way i can prove it i will be happy to..

and @nymins Yeah 20-25 is more accurate for crysis, i got up to 40 on COD4 though

I demand benchies.

I don't want to bow out of PC gaming, that's the point! And i couldn't afford £150 anyway, and it would be more because i would have to replace the motherboard as well.

That was including the mobo. :)

What I'm saying really is that in my opinion new hardware is not really necessary for a good 3 quarters of a year after its release.

But Core2 has been out AGES... and so has the 8800 series. A lot of the powerful hardware around today is over a year old. :)

if that set up can run crysis at "90% high" with those fps, then my set up should get around 3x that. which is not the case

infact, more than 3x that. id say closer to 8x actually

Download FRAPS and you can benchmark through it.

Crysis has a GPU benchmark in the Bin32 folder somewhere. It will give average, min and max fps.

except, on release a 4000+ cpu was probably around the price a q6600 is now, and your mobo was the same price as a current decent c2d mobo, and your gfx card, on release wasn't far off the price of a 8800gt. so whats your point, you upgraded 2 years ago, so its silly that anyone else upgrades inbetween the time that you make your upgrades. there are plenty of people who, me included upgrade frequently. so what, lots of people on the forum upgrade every 2-3 years. just because their cycle means they went from a x800 to a 8800, doesn't mean they are spending more than you. or you waited a year after release of your parts, got them second hand, so what, you can get a c2d with 8800 second hand for the same price you paid for your parts. thats life.

either way, if you upgrade every 2-3 years, your old parts are worth next to nothing when you sell them.

if for instance i bought a x1950xt for £250 , then i sell that for £200 ish around the release of the 2900xt, and buy that for £250, then i sell that a little before the next cards for £200, then buy the next card for £250, it means over 3 years say i ALWAYS have a top peforming card that can play everything at top settings, and i've only spent £150 on upgrading after the initial £250 cost of the card, £400. or i buy a x1950xt for £250 on release, 3 years later i get a HD5870 for £250, and due to age i get about £20 for my out of date, out of warranty x1950xt, so i've spent £450 and had a card that was fast for the first year, a little out of date for the next 6 months, another 6 months where it struggles in lots of games and the final year i'm playing no games in top quality or high resolutions anymore. so for £50 more i get an overall FAR worse gaming experience.

that IS why a lot of people upgrade frequently. because it means you spend the same, or even less having a TOP system all the time. not a hard choice in my opinion.

Get Fraps and take some screenshots with the framerate overlapped in Crysis, all settings at high...

8800GT vs 7800GT

I know they're not in the same place but I don't have access to the MP Beta any more unfortunately, but the 7800GT has all high enabled and the 8800GT has all very high that are available in XP.

I've tried to get a shot with a fair bit of action going on and the lowest FPS I have a screenshot of (8800gt).

It's four times as fast with higher settings!

steve258, what kind of benchmark would you like, 3dmark?

or is there a cod4 benchamark

Just the usual if you want - 3dmark 2006, crysis built in bechmark as described above, using the built-in benchmark tool of FRAPs to record the fps over a few mins of COD4 & UT3 during intense fights or other games you play.

I still don't see why people are shelling out hundreds if not thousands of pounds for quad cores and the like. Any views?

If people have spare cash lying around, they often like to spend it on their hobbies. And for many people on a forum like this, hardware (and gaming) is the primary hobby.

I could have got by with my old setup (A64 3000+, 2gig PC3200) for longer but I just get a kick out of buying stuff I consider good value. The crazy thing is I've got a reasonable gaming system (the obove coupled with a 6800GT, Audigy 2 and 160gig HD) just sat lying around that hasn't been booted up in months. Bit of a waste really but there you go.

I get 32fps in Crysis on high @ 1280x960 in XP (latest beta forceware) so I call Pinocchio :p

I'm sorry but looking at a rock, zoomed in with a sniper scope doesn't count as your average fps!
