never really thought about this, i have an i7 950 @3.06ghz.
it never exeeds more than 8% on all cores or 25% on 1.
even though i used cubase and NI Massive and nuendo and all this fancy audio editing software, my pc never struggles. even arkham asylum never exeeds 20+ % on cores.

so it got me thinking. what is a 950 cabable of, what can it do. im not a techie and i LOVE learning something new and interesting. so tell me people, what is my processor capable of. what would make it struggle (inb4 prime 95 :P)

can we cure cancer on these chips or is that still upto supercomputers.

how long would it take to rip a bluray and encode to mkv ?

do i need a render farm to create a pixar like 3d animation anymore ?

also can some one describe MIPS and GFlops to me in a simplified way, i kinda gathered its a measurement of how many calcs a second it can do ?

whats the mips/gflops of an i7 950 stock. whats the mips/gflops of an i7 950 @ 4ghz ?

Distributed computing (F@H/Seti, stuff like that) would really push your cpu, as all that is, is pure mathematical calculations, and the more cores and speed there is the faster it does it.

By that i mean you get projects to crunch through, and send them back, the faster they are done the better, and u get more points, the points are like a ranking system to see how well you are going, its not a massive part of it, just friendly competition.

So you don't need super computers to do it, if a lot of people are doing it, F@H alone, is up there with some of the fastest supercomputers when it comes to the data figures. Just it can never be listed as its not in any one place, and it changes a lot.

You could render 3D animation, but would take quite some time thats for sure, hence why the likes of pixar use a lot of machines in farms, to cut the time frame down, even then it takes a lot of time, so on a single machine it would take years and years.
