What is peoples problem with C&C Generals?

The problem with Command & Conquer: Generals was that it was an EA game called Generals, that when EA acquired Westwood had C&C slapped on the front. Other than that it was a good game. Despite being a C&C whore I've not played the third one yet. Tried the demo and couldn't get past the fact the zoom level was horrendously low. Didn't help I'd being playing SupCom either.

I was dissapointed with zoom level too, not a great deal of differance is it.

Cheers for the replies everyone, maybe its not as hated as i thought,

Without a doubt my most favourite game ever - thanks to Generals I got a 2:1 instead of a First :)

Shame about the horrendous netcode and awful in-game lobby. The multiplayer was about as good as gaming gets when it worked.

it is a very VERY poor game tbh. nothing on red alert 2 and nothing on tiberium sun. didnt like it one bit, the camera was far too close in and the gameplay was awful.

I played C&C generals quite a lot, especially zero hour. It just didnt feel like it had the same quality of units and correct balance of units / gameplay that C&C had and C&C 3 has. There was far far FAR too many irritating tactics that could be used.

To mention a few..

GLA's bloody tunnels straight from the start!
GLA's scud weapon rapid fire bug that haunted the game for ages as kids realised how to do it.
china infantry ridiculously overpowered compared to other teams to the point where a top quality USA would struggle against an average china inf.
USA's chinnocks early game..

Just so many other things early game really!! If you play with mates at a lan it'd be good but playing with randoms with extremely irritating tactics was extremely tedious.

annoys me still thinking back :p

glad C&C 3 is out!!

Got C&C 3 and cant get into it, skirmish is nice but the campaign is sooo damn sloooooooooow, never played tib sun although i have it, same for renegade, only good c&c games have soviets and allies in it not nod/gdi, but thats my opinion.

Generals was good, just nice action an not too concentrated on the graphics instead of gameplay.

But if i had to choose:
RA2 = best
Followed by C&C original & RA1
Then generals
Tib sun & renegade
And worst one is c&c 3

Generals was good in total, C&C 3 has a nice skirmish, but otehwise I dont liek it at all, especially the campaign, soooooooo slow.

I guess I'm easily pleased! All the CnC series is awesome!

Thing i miss most are those mission udnerground and in buildings in rad alert, where you had hardly any units, really needed skill to complete the hard ones.

Biggest gripe so far with CnC3 is campaign has been a lil easy so far.

i dislike C&C and still do, generals is the only one thats worth playing, even C&C3 is seeming a bit pants to be honest, theres nothing at all new about it from say red alert 2, same bleeding stuff that was in tiberium sun in a new engine, and the original red alert was utter pants :p *prepares for the onslaught of the fanboys*

Simply Generals is not a C&C game, its some lack luster rts with C&C put on the front to help sales, Now C&C3 that IS a C&C game.
Except it's not by Westwood, since EA bought them and then completely shut them down, so it's not a real C&C either technically speaking. Just nothing new in any of these EA RTS games.

that is utter rubbish. C&C3 is a jumped up clone of generals with polished graphics.

Generals was a great game, especially zero hour which added a lot to it. People didn't like it because it wasn't like Ra2. As far as I'm concerned C&C3 offers little improvement over generals, in actuality I think C&C3 has crappier units because it hardly borrows much from Tiberium Sun which was way ahead of its time.

this new C&C hardly offers much, its the same tried tested formula yet again.

I agree c&c 3 is a big letdown it's incredibly shallow compared to generals
i for one won't be buying it.Online play will just be whoever builds most
units the fastest wins very little strategy in it.It's more a pick up and play quick burst rts than something to really get into.

I thought Generals was OK but nothing special and I wasn't motivated to play it through, compared to RA2 which I love.

Similar to Warcraft 3 which came out around the same time... played a few missions and then got fed up, unlike Warcraft 2.

well generals/zh has the hack to increase fov, so hopefully c&c3 will have a similar thing.

edit: oh yeah, i had no complaints about generals, its not as bad as people were making it out to be compared to RA2.

Its totally beyond me how anyone can say C&C 3 is shallow with all the china inf outpost rushing that was going on with generals!! Forget the graphics..C&C 3 to me feels a much more balanced game with far less irritations. Generals to me had this horrible way of making me feel cheated when i got beat because of the tactics used! maybe i'm the only one who felt like this...

It's shallow because nothing matters apart from number of tanks vs number of tanks etc whereas coh brings terrain position cover etc etc into play.

i LOVE playing Generals, you just have to remember it's nothing to do with C&C.

It's got some awesome modpacks too, loads of superweapons can level the teams pretty quickly :D

But at least there were tactics, not just tank rushing. You never knew where, or how, your enemy was coming from when played online.

my only gripe with generals was the annoying americans, the whole 'doing whats right' crap, how bloody annoying, its like having cramp in your calf, fair enough you can see the funny side, but after a couple of times its just bleeding annoying. but i agree that C&C3 offers well a grand total of well...nothing over previous C&C games, actually come to think of it, there was C&C which was horrendous, then there was like load more games with the C&C name, which were all the same game really, just in disguise, the artillery was utter W**K, the naval units were tripe, the tanks were hilariously, even brilliantly terrible, i had total annihilation (my computer could run it properly) when my mates still played C&C red alert, and the difference was shocking, in TA not only could you have proper artillery (meaning beyond line of sight really) you could have ships that were actually ships, TA was better than all the C&C games up until generals, which is great to this day, every team is a bit different, yeah the GLA can use there tunnels but hell, everyone can use similar tactics, for example US tank rushing, there standard tank is without doubt the strongest and there infantry struggling to beat chinese infantry, how so there flashbangs maul them :p the USA had the best technology bar non, the chinese were well, annoying and the GLA were great, cloak and dagger style using outdated crap for weapons, but making do with it. not even the new drooled over C&C3 offers anything compaired to generals, if you want a proper RTS buy supreme commander, problem solved cause its superior in well every single aspect, thank you for your time ;)

i could never get into generals

I've always been a big time C&C fan, RA1, tib sun, RA2 and most of the add-ons but generals just didnt feel like a C&C game to me

i guess one reason was it seemed too complicated lol
In the original C&C's you have all your stuff you can build on one side, you just click and build, very repetative and easy. With generals i just didnt like the whole click a building to build stuff, upgrading tanks etc with new weapons and stuff and the whole zooming in and out just annoyed me

TBH im finding a similar thing with the new C&C, i mean its almost gone back to its roots with the buildin stuff, but its still got the zoomy camera and whats the the right hand click to move people and vehicles etc???

i guess at the end of the day i like and enjoy simple, mindless, repetative games like tib sun and RA2 :) (though having said that, it does require a fari bit of skill sometimes with tactics etc)

just my 2pence
