What is Progressive scan?

It's the opposite of interlacing.

TV in the UK runs at 50Hz - i.e. the screen refreshes 50 times a second. However, only every other line of the image is refreshed with every cycle. This is called interlacing and can causing flickering problems.

With progressive scan, each line is refreshed with every cycle. Thus, the image quality is improved.

Check out Wikipedia for more info.

Thanks for the reply Tunney the reason i ask is that when i press the Progressive scan button on the remote the picture goes all diagonal lines on the screen and i can't see any picture. Is this normal or should it still be clear? Also do i need to use this function?

Don't you also need to connect with RGB component or HDMI to support progressive scan? I know my DVD player says component only for it.

That's correct.

Only interlaced signals can be passed down scart, composite or S-video cables.

Use component assuming your TV isnt an LCD/Plasma.

No my tv isn't lcd/plasma.What about using one of those scart plugs that have the 3 rca connectors on in the back of the tv to composite connectors on the recorder, would that work?

No mate, that's composite not component. What you described is one connector for video and two for audio. Component uses all three connectors for just the video signal.

ajm, I wrote a bit about analogue interconnects in the sticky last year. Go check it out.

What is the make and model of your TV?

Panasonic PD30?
Toshiba Picture Frame?

Really doubt your tv has component in. Hardly any CRTs had/have component in and those that do tend to be at the high end of the market (Panasonic Pd30/50 etc).

So what would be the best connection to use from my dvd recorder to my tv?

Tv has .................
2 scarts with in & out on each one which can use s-video.

Dvd recorder has....2 scarts
composite vid in
S-vid in
composite vid out
S-vid out
component vid out
scart in
scart out
+ lots of audio in and out.

RGB Scart would be the best bet matey :) Just connect a scart lead from the DVD to the RGB enabled scart on the TV (will be AV1), then make sure the DVD player is set to output RGB.

Job done :)
