What Is Quoting An Image?

It's not hard to re-code the forum to disallow or change how image quoting is done.

If it's a hack then it almost certainly wouldn't be done, the forums are kept relatively standard as far as is possible. Additionally it isn't a problem across the whole forum, it's primarily the Random Image Thread and maybe a couple of others in other sub-forums where quoting images isn't allowed.

I might as well pop the question here as it relates to the random image board. I had a 2-day holiday a couple of years back due to hotlinking in that thread, which is against OcUK rules anyway. I just want to clarify what hotlinking means? I thought it meant that you write the bbs code around a url so that it appears as an image instead of the url, like with embedded video and SWF files. Also, like with our sigs. I've known of hotlinking for some 10 years now and we're all doing it, so I need to know which is allowed and which isn't? Cheers :-)

Hotlinking is linking to an image that is hosted on someone elses servers and can therefore change at any time while your link remains the same. I think thats the right explanation... so imageshack etc if your image gets deleted your link gets killed(so isnt hotlinking) rather than swapping it out for a new image which could happen if you link directly to other sites images

basically i cant explain it but just know what not to do :o

It also leeches other sites bandwidth, which was a big thing back in the day if someones limit was low. Like a small personal site.

The problem with hotlinking for a family friendly forum is that the person who was hosting the original image from their own server, could discover the hotlink and maybe be vindictive enough to (as your link stays the same) change it for porn etc. and you'd get banned.
