What Is Raid

JBOD isn't RAID, technically neither is RAID 0 as neither meet the requirement to be "Redundant".

How much improvement does it make? Depends on what you do with your data. If you're doing disk intensive reads while editting massive video files RAID can be a big benefit but if you're just playing games, RAID will only improve your load times but not your game-playing.

Its claimed RAID0 boosts performance by 30-40% but be aware you are increasing your chance of losing all your work, if you get a HDD failiure on either one your whole system goes down. RAID0 gives you the full amount of space too, if you have 2 x 320gig HDD you have 640 gig space, its RAID1 where you would only have 320gig

Would a raptor drive be a more suitable potential investment for someone with my needs? Would that improve performance to similar effects?

Erm, what are your needs?
If you could afford it I'd personally go for a SSD for your boot drive with an additional 7200rpm 1Tb storage drive, wish I'd done it myself but SSD's were bit too expensive at time, think they've dcome down a bit now though

Don't forget Raid 10

If you've got 4 disks raid 10 gives speed and security. The reads are spread over all 4 disks so are fast. OK so you lose half the capacity but speed and security? - got to be worth it.

If you just want to do gaming, general office use etc on your PC I really wouldn't bother with any kind of RAID. It's not even really needed with most people's music projects with the speed of hard drives these days. Where it comes into it's own is video editing or large file servers.
