hi I have just reaquired my old am2+ system and I would like to know what is the best cpu I can get to put in it, I am abit old school and I am keen to see what the old dog can do, but I have been on intel for a long time now and I am not upto speed on amd, even if its 6 core or fx..... thanks

What is the motherboard model??

Every Phenom II CPU will work on AM2+ including the Phenom II X6 1100T.

However, whether the motherboard VRMs are upto the task is another question.

hi the board is an asus crosshair II formula, I don't know about vrms I guess that's the extra power for the chip, I have checked the cpu support list and am guessing that the 6 core 1090t would be the best, there is only 1 fx chip on there which was a dual core, but that list is from 2012...

Fastest possible CPU on AM2+ Motherboards is the Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition but as mentioned depends on your motherboard. Can get them on ebay for about £50

That's not remotely true :p

Phenom II X4 940 was an AM2+ chip, DDR2 IMC only, same as the Phenom II x4 920.

These chips won't work on AM3.

They were the fastest AM2+ chips.

And I'd be worried to find you not get a Phenom II X4 940 for 50, I sold one for about 30 quid :p

EDIT : My friend ran a deluxe one of those 790FX ROG boards and it flat out wouldn't run with a Phenom II, even though it clearly stated it would, he changed BIOS chip, tried different Phenom II's, was all up to date, just wouldn't work for whatever reason.

But then there's plenty of people who ran similar 790FX boards and it worked fine.

He was running the old 690 SB IIRC.

My Bad :p I thought it was a AM2+ motherboard

Yes, all cores will run at 3.2GHZ.

GHZ isn't a set performance scale though.
1GHZ of 1 CPU from X range could differ from another CPU at 1GHZ of range Y.
