What is the Best Mountain Bike Make?

As above. It's the wrong question to be asking when making a purchase.

A few better ones are:

1) What will you be using the bike for? A mountain bike might not even be the best kind of bike for you.

2) What is your budget?

3) Any specific requirements in mind?

Hello, thanks for the reply. I have started another thread with my specific requirements. Please take a look.

If people want to comment on makes in general in this thread, that would also be appreciated.

Thanks :)

Ah yes, so you have.

I'll let someone with more MTB knowledge recommend stuff for you in the other thread. The only advice I'd offer here is: Don't worry about the 'make' too much. There will probably be quite a few different options around the price point you're looking at and usually it is spec or a particular setup that will really differentiate - brand often really doesn't matter.

The best bike manufacturer is very subjective.
I would only buy Specialized bikes because 1)They are amazing bikes, 2)They have superb aftercare, 3)They have a great history, 4)They have riding passion embedded in everything they do.
On the other hand some people avoid Specialized bikes at all costs.

For your £1k the best 'bang for your buck' bike will likely be an online supplier, like Canyon, the downside of this is not so good after sales support.
Brands such as Specialized, Trek, Giant (to name a few) have superb after sales support and warranty, but you generally pay quite a bit more for them.

There really is no such thing as the "best" bike manufacturer - there are however lots of manufacturers who make very good mountain bikes and which one is best for you will be a personal thing. People can probably give you some pointers but actually riding a few bikes is probably more likely to tell you what you do and don't like than looking at a spec sheet. I'd also suggest that if you're going to get into it for the longer term it may make more sense to prioritise a good frame that you can upgrade over time rather than spending your budget on something which has flashier components but isn't so good.

I've not really paid too much attention to mountain bikes recently but back when I did aside from the brands SDK^ mentions I'd also have been looking for Kona, Whyte & GT amongst others. Generally speaking you'll get a better deal if you consider buying bikes from the previous season.

Thanks for the replies guys :D

I will be taking bikes out on test rides soon, this is just the pre bike shop visit research.

I've seen Specialized. Yes, nice bikes, the ones I've seen have been a little on the pricey side though.

I like the Trek brand and will research more.

Saw the Whyte brand for the first time today, hadn't heard of them will research. Any input welcome.

Thanks guys :)

I thought there was a joke about Specialized along the lines of...

"Friends don't let friends ride Specialized..."

Bear in mind I ride a Carrera, and spend most of my time on a weightlifting platform...

Apollo, or am I really out of touch? (Was I ever in touch?)

Very, very out of touch!

They've done some nice bikes, I wouldn't touch any of their stuff though. Too expensive for my tastes. Though my full sus is a specialized, I got it for a bit of a bargain.

Riding > lifting too ;)
