Hey people,

Before i start, im a bit of a novice, so if this sounds like an easy question, i apologise in advance. I currently have the gigabyte m55plus s3g in my computer with a Sempron 3400+ 1.8Ghz - id really like to get some more power out of my system, i have absolutely no idea about over clocking, and am really worried to attempt it in case i really mess something up.

So with that in mind, im guessing the only option would be for me to upgrade my processor. Could anybody please advise on how best i can acheive more power out of my system current system by overclocking (will need a huge huge beginners guide) or the other option is what is the best processor i can get in my current mother board please?

Computer Spec:
AMD Sempron 3400+ 1.8Ghz
Ram - 4gb DDR2 (2x 2gb stick)
gigabyte m55plus s3g

Thanks in advance for any advice you are able to supply me with.

Andy

I would go for one of these: Clicky
Motherboard support list here: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2283

Need to check your BIOS revison before upgrading.

Hiya,

Thanks for the reply, and do forgive me if i sound dumb. I really want to purchase the processor that you have recommended, howevr im not too sure about the last bit you mentioned, the bios revision check before upgrading.

Im really sorry, im a novice but if you can provide a little more advice on whether i should purchase, and possibly tell me a little more about the bios revision thing, i would appreciate it so so much.

Thanks again
Andy

Download this tool and under the motherboard tab it will tell you what bios version is currently in use on your system. You can either decide which processor to go for according to the version. Or take the steps to flashing your bios :)

Thank you very much. I am looking into that now. I have one more question for you if you dont mind. I was reading a review on the processor i was recommended to buy (in the above post), and this is what it said:

well,

intel can beat this at this price point easily so id ont know what your on about

the e5200 which is 10 quid less is faster at stock speeds (2.5ghz), uses less power, runs cooler and overclocks better

however this does look like a good upgrade if you already have an am2 system as its about equal to a 2.3ghz~ core 2, which is pretty good

Is this an accurate review, would going with AMD be my best option here when you take into account my current hardware, or would keeping to the AMD suggested be a better move?

I appreciate your time and patience in explaining this to me, unfortunately i dont have an ounce of the technical brains you guys have, so i doo appreciate your advice.

Well it is an accurate review but you would need to change your motherboard if you wanted to change over to intel and anything else if say gfx card was agp and the new board was pci-e. So would end up very costly :)

ah i see, thats great. thanks so much for that, ill go ahead and buy the one recomended. board bios looks to be fine with that chip, so hopefully all should go well.

Thanks again :)
