What is the best way to make a free website for someone who has next to no HTML skill

Is anyone going to offer a > suitable < solution or just keeping bashing the OP everytime he/she asks an additional question?...

One thing is clear, the OP does not have much knowledge of the subject, so perhaps pointing at some starting points instead of just bashing would be of more benefit.

Firstly, it can be googled...

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...w+do+i+make+a+free+website?&btnG=Search&meta=

Or if you want more of a break down of whats needed....
  • A webhost
  • A system or language to manage the content
  • A clear description of what the site content should be
Webhost:
If you want a free host you're not going to find many that are any good, usually they have down-time, problems getting connected, and all sorts, of course some are better then others.

Content Management:
How will your content be managed. You can do this several ways, firstly using a CMS (content management system), google it if required, there's lots to choose from. Secondly you could hand write the code, but you'd need specific knowledge on the given language, for example a basic webpage with the words "Hello Mark" would be done most likely using HTML, if you want more fancy stuff they static text you need a webhost that supports additional languages such as PHP, MySQL, and so on... again if you do not know what these are type them into google.

Alternatively there are free hosts that will provide a tool with which to build the site, you do no coding, you simply place boxes and text and save.

Content:

You need to know what you wish to have on the website. This will help you determine what your requirements are. If you want a forum for example you're going to need PHP(more then likely) and (in most cases) a database, commonly MySQL when it comes to forums. Free webhosts won't always offer this so know what you need before you register.

Conclusion:

Decide what the site needs, find out what requirements there are for those given needs, then move on from there. Google will provide all the answers you require, you just need a clear definition of what your site requires and what tools you will need.

NOTE: Now this isn't a bash, but i think others were touching on an important area. If you want help, you need to be willing to help yourself, not rely on all the answers being put out there for you. Not saying you are not willing, but if you want help, you will need to do some of the leg work also.... ;)

Although it will require a tiny bit of html/css/php knowledge, I would very much recommend pixelpost; http://www.pixelpost.org/ for a photography website. It's what im using now (not live on my website yet though as im finishing the new version of the site off) and it features a creat content management system, has loads of addons and support for it and can create a good photography site. :)

I'll second that :) (I gave him the idea of using pixelpost :D)

You're welcome, if you have any questions google can't answer feel free to post back.... :)

right I've gone away and googled some stuff and I think the pixel post thing posted seems to meet requirements.

is the site your sig links to using pixelpost?

I'm not quite sure how you upload your website with it, as I don't have a server atm, how do i find a server that is:

PHP 4.3 or greater (w/ GD-lib)
MySQL 3.23.58 or greater

I was going to point you to this thead:

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=39766&highlight=pixelpost

which is a guide to setting up pixelpost, but it appears the images are no longer there so I hope it still makes sense. I did put a copy into a word document when I first set mine up so I'll have a look see if I can find it for you maybe..

seems like you need to be a member of the forum to view that page, just going to sign up now.

If you go to the gallery.... then no. That's using monoslideshow. If you remove the .php after gallery then you will be taken to the pixelpost version (Please excuse it if it breaks, as im working on it at the moment.).

oh yeah, that's pretty nice.

I just need a free server/ftp/domain now.

I still don't really get how FTP/servers/domain all work together, because I've always used freehosts in the past it's been kind of all in one.

edit: downloaded pixel post now and ive just got a folder full of random folders and files which mean nothing to me

If you're going to be using it to display work, I'd recommend just getting a simple shared hosting account.

http://www.tsohost.com/

£15 for a full year is nothing really for what you get.

All the folders you have now will go on the server and you'd use an FTP program (like FireFTP) to connect to the server and transfer those folders across. In your welcome email from whatever host (server) you decide to go with, will be all the FTP details to connect to the server.
