What is the current budget Android phone king?

I am in the market for a replacement for my youngest's Android phone and wondered if there was a widely recognised budget "king" these days?

I've watched all sorts of video reviews for the likes of the Nothing Phone 2a, Motorola G85 (or 55) as well as the Galaxy A35/36 but thers are too many variables!

Any suggestions welcome!

The ~£100 Oppo phones are usually quite decent for the money if on a strict budget. A little more money but I quite favour the Sony mid-range phones as recent models the build quality and battery life are substantial and overall spec is good, though the cameras tend to be underwhelming especially considering they are Sony and the SoC performance is distinctly average (though the odd aspect ratio of the screen might not be for everyone).

What is the max budget?

I'm not upto date, but Poco phones always provided a lot of value if you're ok with the software on them.

Any idea what they usually do on the phone?

Sometimes the Pixels A series dips to a lower price, around the Nothing's 2a price point, generally a good all rounder and long software support.

Poco phones could be another consideration, don't have direct experience with them but they tend to be a little more focused on raw SoC performance if they game a fair bit on the phone.

Thanks for the replies - budget-wise I wasn't thinking of spending more than £250 tops.

In terms of use its predominantly for gaming I guess - although he tends to play what I would deem as being less demanding games rather than the FPS games you can get on mobile these days!

Had my Motorola G9 Play for 3 years now. Its been fine.

Looking for something new myself....

Be interested what you choose.

Thanks @david25 for the suggestions - I'm quite liking the look of the G75 to be honest!

I have also looked at the Moto G85 but I'm not too big a fan of a curved display because I always find it awkward to fit a screen protector to!

I would look at getting a used flagship rather than a new budget. Maybe s22 ultra.
I wouldn't. Due to battery health and warranty.

Poco X7 Pro is what I got a family member recently for £240. 2025 model so bang upto date.

Fast and smooth. Android 15. Big bright 120hz oled screen, fast charging 3 years OS and 4 security updates. 6000mah battery yet still light. Camera is actually decent too. 256GB and 8GB RAM.

It has plenty of bloatware but literally takes 5 mins to remove. No PC required.

Looking further into my suggestion Poco X7 Pro can be had for around £250 with coupons.

Reviews seem to praise performance and AMOLED screen.

Poco phones are brilliant.

I recently picked up a pixel 8a with buds for £230, not sure if deals like that are still floating about?

Was going to suggest the X7 Pro as well if you want brand new. HyperOS isn't my cup of tea personally but a lot of people are fine with it. Not sure if it's still the case but apparently the 12GB RAM model handles multitasking a lot better than the 8GB model, but updates may have fixed that. Definitely a step up in terms of specs compared to the Moto G75, will do better in gaming.

Daughter and wife have galaxy A series - around £260 for the A55 (my daughters phone). Large screen, good battery life, latest Android. Pretty good phone for the cash. My wife has the a54 which is £230 ish - pretty much the same as the a55. Either are good
