what is the worst thing about building a new pc

Gotta be the front panel connectors. I still don't have a (working) power LED, or HD activity LED. I must have wired them up the wrong way round, and cba to flip it round lol.

  • Miss the delivery;
  • Parts arrive separately e.g. motherboard on Friday, processor on Tuesday (its never Monday for me :( );
  • Item you listed on MM or eBay to fund new part/s doesn't sell;
  • Item you listed on MM or eBay to fund new part/s sells for way less but you need the money (/landlady knocks on door);
  • Your m8/girlfriend/etc come over when your in the middle of a build;
...I could go on & on. But funny enough the build always goes well (touch wood). Maybe that's because I use OcUK Forums to guide me in buying quality stuff. Also maybe because I buy a lot of second-hand/b-grade/etc stuff which, though used is guaranteed to work!

You assemble the whole machine, plug in all the wires, push the power switch and nothing happens. So you disconnect everything and strip the whole thing down again. Turns out the be a dodgy IDE cable or something silly like that.

Asides from DOA hardware the thing I found most terrifying (first time I had built a machine) was putting a socket A heatsink onto a thunderbird. You had to insert the screwdriver into the grippy thing and push REALLY hard down the way and also pull out to get it to go over the lip of the clamp.

Coolers seem to be of better design these days so the most annoying bit is attaching front panel usb where they have each wire seperate instead of using an all in 1 clip.

Apart from DOA the most annoying thing is just generally doing something stupid like not connecting the power lead to a hard drive.

You've already convinced yourself that you've checked everything over and so it must be a more serious fault (like a DOA mobo) - so you start spending half an hour trying to diagnose what the faulty component may be, only to suddenly realise your schoolboy error - grrrrrr :mad:

So a pseudo-DOA is more annoying that a real DOA :D (well for about 2 minutes at least, while you feel like a total *****) ;)

Not that I've ever done that before :rolleyes:

Cutting yourself on the case!

I've done this on most PCs I've ever built, I just think of it as the computers christening ;)

The front panel connectors are usually the most irritating thing I find although I've done it so many times now on different PCs it scarcely bothers me.
