What is this AMD "driver issue"?

Moved from a 680 power edition to the R9 390 and part of me wishes I hadn't. Can't use onboard sound anymore and Battlefront which has been out for over a month has driver graphics issues on Hoth still - even with the beta drivers!

Below is what I get when playing that map; (excuse the terrible quality phone pic of a screen)

Theres nothing wrong with the drivers, they are the same as Nvidias, both have good/bad ones, the AMD are good cards, just their drivers are terrible tag, they'll never shake off.

I was looking through the list of known issues for Crimson and came across this:
[81651] Star Wars™: Battlefront - texture corruption may be experienced if the game "Field of View" setting is > 100

Does setting the FOV below 100 get rid of this problem?(don't have the game myself).

It's a myth.

Some people didn't like the AMD control panel software and confused it with "the drivers" because you can't actually see the drivers. They've got a new cpanel now.

People's memories always seem very short when it comes to this subject - not a myth at all - for a long time nVidia was far quicker having a stable driver out for a new game release and a lot quicker at fixing issues that did arise - which typically only affected a sub-set of users whereas ATI/AMD driver issues tended to affect a larger number of their users when they did happen.

These days a far less clear cut picture - nVidia have had a run of drivers that have caused stability issues for a good proportion of people and there are a few ongoing issues that don't seem to be getting resolved, AMD had been pulling their socks up for a bit on the driver front with a lot of legacy issues resolved but of late they seem to be dropping off a bit again.

Missed that when googling but unfortunately my FOV is only on 75. Just had a quick go after cranking it up to 100 but no difference :(

I recently upgraded from a GTX 690 to a Sapphire R9 390X along with a system built around a 5820K. There are some issues with the Crimson driver and games where downclocking will occur when it's not supposed to, particularly when VSync is enabled it likes to drop to 30fps in Dreamfall Chapters and mind path to thalamus whereas without Vsync it is at 130 fps e.g. beginning of Dreamfall Chapters(this is not intentional power saving, it's power saving changes implemented incorrectly). AMD are working on this according to their twitter.

My honest experience with the card is that it's a very good card for the money, very cool and quiet(Sapphire model), good sized VRAM 8GB and things are certainly improving in terms of Radeon technologies group's direction and features like shader cache which gets rid of quite a bit of stuttering as well as Low framerate compensation for freesync(I don't have a freesync monitor but will certainly consider one now). Overall, the experience in games has been very good and it has been very stable, moreso than my Nvidia card.

However, there are little niggling driver problems in a fair number of games that I've tried (some very minor, to be fair)e.g. Dirt Rally flashing when camera view changes or when I crash the car (only in replay mode); random shader cache texture corruption in Witcher 3 and DA Inquisition; Mantle not working properly in DA Inquisition and adding greatly to load times; Texture flashing in mind a path to thalamus (on the steps) and locking to 30 fps unless I re-apply my settings every time I start up the game which corrects it and texture flashing and low fps in metro redux.

GTA 5 also stutters greatly and drops to 30 fps when I load into story mode (Trevor's caravan), but this can be worked around by disabling Vsync and then re-enabling it and then it's a solid 60fps and very smooth (so doesn't bother me). I have reported these problems to AMD.

the driver thing is a bit yin & yang .....

I had some issues with Crimson but in the end after a clean install the only issue I have at the moment is the up and down gpu usage. AMD are aware of this issue and I am hoping this is something that they resolve quickly but my CF setup is working and my cards are running nice and cool :-)

Surely it is because of your FX8350 is bottlenecking the crossfire 390x- assuming if you are gaming at 1080p?
