I know it's a DVI splitter I need, but I don't know if it's DVI-D or whatever it's called as there seemd to be a lot of variations about...

What do I need to order specifically?

Thanks,

DVI-D is the standard, it will be fine.

Edit:

DVI-A is analogue, DVI-D is digital, DVI-I is both.

I'm sure youre aware of this but using a splitter like that will provide an identical image on the displays it's connected to.

You can't use it to run an extended desktop across 2 monitors for example.

Yup, although you can get DVI-D (Dual Link) connectors which output 2 outputs. However, we do not know what the OP has. Until they clarify, we are in the dark! Sometimes DVI and HDMI share the same source. I would guess at these being the 2 different outputs though.

I thought Dual Link just enabled output of higher resolutions.

This is what I read:

Dual link should not be confused with dual display (also called dual head), which describes those situations where a computer is hooked up to two monitors at once.

I thought that cable splitter will just output the same image twice.

And if it was dual DUAL DVI split into two single DVI each one would not be able to do resolutions of 1600 x 1200 or higher.

That's as I understood it anyhow, but have not personally tried that cable in that way.

Looks Like Either or both to display 1 image.

you need a gfx card with two outputs to have two screens display different images for desktop spanning.

your photo shows a half height pci card slot, without knowing what gfx card it is, it's hard to say weather that is dual head gfx card, or not.
