What is this called?

When you double click some disk images (DMG) that you download to install certain applications such as Skype for example you get a window where you can drag the application to the applications folder to install (sort of like an autorun dialog I guess).

Does this have a specific term and is it possible to create my own to make it easy to install an application that I distribute?

AFAIK it's just a normal folder. There are probably certain hidden files that you can put in there to specify window size, icon position and background image.

Actually, that's probably the purpose of the .DS_Store file, which is just an annoyance in 90% of other situations.

Figured it out with the help of a tutorial. Turns out it's a simple as changing the view options, and dragging the icons where you want as it's all saved in the .DS_Store so it will look the same when opened on another computer.

I've always preferred apps that give you a shortcut to the Apps folder like that.
