It is named KINDLE-661611E8C... It is on a wireless connection & google says it is a private address... There is a FireOS tablet in the house, could that be it??? There is also a dumb phone here...

Kindle... sounds like a Kindle (I know sorry) reader, the low tech reading tablet thing, some of the models use Wifi rather than a built in 3 G dongle.

If the wifi is turned on, even with the reader "off" (IE in normal standby) it will poll every now and then to check for new books updates etc

My wife has the newer Paperwhite That shows up as "Paperwhite -Kindlexxx" my far older basic one shows up as "Kindle - xxx"

Hmmm, well no one has a Kindle, but it is on the normal wireless account & that is secure WPA2-PSK [AES] & the router is new, got it April 7th...
 
Hmm not sure what to say then, just telling you what I know, you sure someone hasn't given the password out to a friend .. ?

change it, reconfig your devices and see if it reappears.....?
 
Is this showing on the router or in Windows networking? Windows has a bug/feature where it will invent a mobile device but I've never seen it as a Kindle - usually a generic phone.
 
Is it just "WPA2" or is it set to "WPA and WPA2"? Some routers are irritating and default to supporting WPA and WPA2, the former being considerably less secure. Do you have WPS enabled? That's another open door if so. Either way, I highly doubt someone would genuinely be using a Kindle to connect to a network they'd compromised, but then again, pretending to be one is probably a decent way of staying under the radar. I'd go over the settings in the router, hardening as much as is practical, then boot everything off the network and join one device at a time, watching to see if it appears again with each.
 
FireOS is a kindle... so yeah probably is that, turn off and see if it goes. Or remove it and see what no longer works?
